If you are using hooks size 18 and smaller and feel you are losing a lot of fish or are just not getting a good hook set, bend the hook at the gap either left or right to offset the point. This will give you a much better chance at a good hook set when the hooks have such a small gap. See the very simple illustration below:

You know there's a fly shop in oregon that sells hooks like that, always wondered why. Makes sense now. Thanks for the tip!

Wow Packrat, you read my mind. I was just thinking about this since Goddard mentions it in a book of his. He explained it, but didn't illustrate it, and I was always wondering how far to offset the hook, so the illustration is really helpful.

It doesn't take much of a bend to make the hook a lot more effective.

Great timing with this tip--With winter fishing, I've been using very small flies recently for BWO hatches.  Thanks again.
