I've heard a lot of good things about the middle fork of the american. Can anyone please tell me how to get there and if there is good place to really check out? please let me know.. I plan on going on the 6th.. Or any info about the American and where to fish on it?
The Middle Fork American is accessed off of Mosquito Ridge Road out of Foresthill. I would not suggest heading up there right now as it has been extremely cold and flows are very low. The water temps will be probably be down in the lower 40's. I'd recomend heading up in April-June depending on runoff. I'm sure it has even snowed some there in the last storm as snow levels were down to 1500'.
I would check it out. You have to find the fish though. The Lower American River is big water. Not as big as the Sacramento, but big enough. There are steelies & resident trout there. Also Squaw & suckers too. I think going to the Lower American is better than watching fishing shows on TV ;)
theres no fish in the lower american, much better to stay home and watching fishing shows, that out in the water not catching fish, but catching a cold instead.

Just a little side note. All dirt roads in the Eldorado National Forest are currently closed to wheeled vehicle traffic until April 1st. If you want to fish down in the canyon you better plan on walking or find a paved road.
