Steelhead on the Trinity River
Permalink

I just spent a couple of days fishing the Trinity with my freind Chris Parsons who is a guide through The Fly Shop in Redding.  He has been guiding
on the Trinity every winter for the last 5 or 6 years now, and has it down.
The last day of the year saw an end to my drought with Steelies on the Trinity River.  Chris's web site is www.bethefly.com check it out.
By the way, the photos are from the canyon, where I have always been nothing less than frozen solid.

Those are some nice fish. The one on the left would make a great painting.

Yukon Mike...Great fish. The Trinity has beaten me up pretty bad this past 2008, but I've kept my chin up. I'm hoping to head up there for a few days before I get shoulder surgery. Hopefully 2009 will be my year to win the war on Winter Steelies! JW.

This is the first year I've had any luck on the Trinity.  I normally
get zinged.

Nice fish!! Were you swinging with the big spey rod or did you give in to indicator nymphing?

I sure hope so...This river and I have a love/hate relationship. If I get one, I'll probably sleep with it.

Y'all,
My guide and oldest friend is Chris Parsons who can be reached at
www.bethefly.com will get you hooked into the biggest honking
steelies you can think of.  On the Trinity I dead drift nymphs with
an indicator on an 8wt.  I do use a spey rod on other rivers, but there
is no room on the Trinity.  I don't care what you use, you will find them
a rough bunch o' fish.  It is a great place.  Monday night Chris rolled
his Dodge Ram diesel 4x4 with the drift boat in tow off a 250 ft cliff
on Lewiston Dam Rd.  He is surprisingly ok .  He does have another
boat to use and is getting another truck.  I hope some of you can get up there while the river is still hot.  He will make sure you do well.
Just be careful of black ice on the roads.
-Michael

Angryincher and my self have made many trips to the trinity together. There have been plenty of fish caught on each trip.Just none of them by angryincher. The guy can fish and we almost always have the same set up.He will fish a spot and get no love then I make a run through after him and hook up.I can only say its just crazy, weird, dumb luck.
Our last trip up I got one on my second drift of the morning and lost one an hour later.nothing the rest of the day.At the end of the day I realized we were fishing a mile behind one of my good friends with 2 clients in the boat.Having them one step ahead of us all day did not help....While Im at it I shouls say that 59 pines has been sporting the big goose egg on his home water just as long as my good buddy angryincher...

uhhh...  that seems like an odd thing to say.   Trinity is plenty big for a spey rod.
