In short, habitat impacts, encroachment, lack of funds to rehab areas and the more people that come into this world, the more impact is felt on the environment with really no logical way to handle the problems. The human race tries to manage all of the different species on earth, who manages our species. Sometimes the human race isnt the most intelligent. Im out, fishing next week and hope to catch a 25" too. Late
Brundoggy... Regs are regs right? So you won't have a problem if I fish Putah from april to november and keep my 5 fish limit? Those are the regulations. I can keep 35 wild trout a week. Dang, this year Putah's gonna suck.... But who cares, regs are regs.
Just as a newbie here wathcing this argument - looks like some people take someone elses opinion. LilWhippercrapper - your fish on the rocks avatar shows just how much you care and how much common sense you have, so keep your limit. You'll be fishin' bubbas fishin farm and paying for your trout by the inch in no time. you know it's not catchnrelease thear. Your name says it all - young punk with no common sense.
i think ill use shauns saying here, "is this horse dead yet, i think we have beat it enough already." wow this is really going no where. i think i have sat back on this one for to long. so i am finally going to speak up. what i have to say to all this, is that NO ONE IS PERFECT. ill be the first to admit when i am wrong. i have put fish on rocks in the past not knowing that it was harmfull. i finally went and bought a net so i dont have that problem any more. we have all made mistakes, lilwhipper knows what he did was wrong, you dont need to keep bringing it up. once again NO ONE IS PERFECT. when you point a finger just know that 3 are pointing right back atcha.
so lets stop the crying, get out there and fish, protect our fisheries and last but not least, have fun.
CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG. in the long run we are here for one thing and one thing only, (well actually 3) 1 to have fun fishing, 2 to make new fishing buddies, 3 protect our fisheries.
i am no rookie to this board, but by no means am i a veteran, but i will admit that this board isnt what it use to be when i first joined back in aug 07. but i will be the first to admit that i have added to the chaos in the past on this board, one of my new yrs resolutions was to clean up my act, and really work on how i present myself on the website and in person.
so lets get back to what this website was really built for. fishing, info, protecting of the fishery, and best of all new fishing buddies.
thats just my 2 cents, maybe 3.

I know it is hard to always trust the governing agency, which is DFG, but who is the professional here? Despite peoples opinion of Fish and Game, they are the agency that sets the regs, and im assuming studies the watershed. The mission is to protect the fishery, so if the impact of winter fishing is that drastic and negative on Putah, why have they not closed it already? ...... How about this idea, THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD!!
Beastie,
You make some good points here. But don't assume that DFG is on top of things. They are stretched so thin and have many bigger issues to deal with than Putah. Yes there are too many people....the population in CA went from around 19 M in 1970 which is when the fishery in Putah started to about 38 M now. But the pressure on Putah has way more than doubled in that time because of the increased popularity of flyfishing. The regs have essentially stayed the same in all that time. DFG really hasn't studied Putah much either. Hopefully that will change soon and we can have a fishery that is optimally managed based on the best science.
Although the regs allow us to fish now, that doesn't mean we aren't harming the fishery. All the fish you see right now are wild and depend on the spawning that is happening now. We are shooting ourselves in the foot if we cause harm to the spawning population. The regs could change. I personally have not been in favor of closing Putah in the winter but I am beginning to wonder. If you sit at the bridge and watch those spawning fish getting flossed all day long and getting their redds trampled, it is hard to believe that wild trout fishery isn't being harmed.
I fished the creek on Saturday with no luck. Very crowded too. I only saw one fish caught all day and that was from a guy on a Kyak from the RV park. I saw him walking with a 4 to 5 pound wild fish, showing his family and pointing where he caught the fish which was right on the Redds. I was all the way across the creek so I could'nt get into a conversation telling him that there is a zero limit right now. The whole thing got me thinking. I bet that kind of thing happens on a regular basis. The DFG is stretched so thin. I have not seen a Warden in years while I have fished. What good are regulations if they are not going to be enforced? Also, the fact that many rivers, streams are not going to be planted, I think is a bad thing. Bait fisherman will just start catching and keeping the wild fish if there are no planters for them to catch.
A start is using the "report suspicious activity" link on this forum to record what , where, when, you saw the event. I assume you don't know what happened to the fish after the show. This information is held confidentially if you provide name or other contact info. The information is going to DFG Enforcement. Also wtach tne Putah Creek Trout area for more information.
All the nonesense takes place up at the bridge, Personally I don't even know why you guys fish there. Its like a big circus. I guess it's just human nature to follow the crowd.. If I was to read this board and had never actually been to putah creek, My impression would be that every single weekend there are people raking every redd on the creek, That is just not the case, I think there's quit a few people posting on this forum that really don't spend alot of time on the creek and really have no idea whats going on. If dfg decided to close the creek in winter and the closure was based on scientific fact I would support it, If it was closed due to a bunch of unproven opinions I would not support that.
the bridge area has done very good for me. and as far as being crowded, i guess i have been lucky because if i fish putah is normally a tues or weds. fished it one sunday with the ex, and she hooked up a few times under the bridge. a lot of people that day waiting to get that spot, and even a few guys trying to push her out of there as well. not with me buddy, not today. so keep on kicking rocks.

Otter, I also caught one there, It was seven and a quarter inches, although I think it would have gone seven and a half if its tail had not been rubbed down.
