As the year winds down I find myself thinking back on 2008's fishing and I must say its been the best year of my life. I'm blessed to have alot freetime and the finances to do it all. One of the best things about the 2008 year is all the great guys I have met on this forum and on the water, I have yet to meet anyone that I wouldn't fish with anytime. Highlight of my year was getting to spend 10 days in the eastern sierra's just fishing sun up to sun down everyday. I guess the low point would have to be falling and cracking my head open and being paralyzed for a number of seconds on the clark fork river all alone. I've gotten to fish soooooo many rivers, creeks, streams, and a few lakes. I've gotten to see some of the most bueatiful places in the country. Even was lucky enough to have a bear encounter, Although at the time I didn't feel very lucky ! I caught the biggest trout of my life on a fly on putah creek. Theres several other highs and lows experienced over the past year but that could go on and on and on. So I guess it's about time to wipe the slate clean and gear up for another fly fishin year guys ! Merry X-mas guys, Its gonna be another great year. And thanks so much to Bono and Keith for maintaining this great site that is a great source of info. and debate.

Hell yeah! I didn't get to fish much this year due to family health issues but the few times I did get out were quality. I hear ya Shaun, I got to meet and hang out with some great guys who really know how to throw a fly. The weekend at Tahoe was one of my highlights this year, it was a great time. Also, backpacking into Yosemite with just me and my 8 year old daughter was a trip to remember. Didn't focus on fishing but that wasn't the point anyway. Looking forward to a healthier happy new year for all and hopefully many more outings. Next year I want to do the Pit River and the East Walker again for sure. Already thinking about a trip to Tuolumne Meadows, the Dana Fork this time. As always the Big and Little Truckee. Maybe even a few trips to Putah......

I promise to plan something again for next year at our place up there.  I'm heading up skiing for several days over New Year's.  I'll stop into the Blue Coyote and say hello to the Peruvian waitress from all of you.

Depending on conditions next year, maybe we'll shoot for sometime June.  This is usually the best month up there, and I think we're going to do Montana in September this next year anyway.

That trip was a lot of fun for me as well.  Maybe Keith or Bono can make it up with us next year??!! Thanks for the good times.

Bob

hello fellow flyers, i am so glad to learn how to roll cast, mend, high-stick then low-stick then BOOYAH, that THINGAMABOBBER goes shootin under water with my first pig in DEC. I started Flyin in Aug this year and i have to say this is the probably the best year i've had fishin. My bestfriend who knows DANNY-O gave me a lot of pointers like adjusting your indicator on diffrent flows, using weight to keep your midge bouncing on the bottom, low stickin in some crazy areas, high sticking in fast flows, put 2 and 2 together, and boy, i tell ya.  now i know why a 5wt is a 5wt. fly fishing has consumed me since August till now. I hit Putah Creek at least 3 times during the week since Aug.  And yes i've been there every weekend since Aug. fly fishin. I met a couple of great people this year in and out the water and they all have answered a lot of my questions. I buy my flies at BERYESSA sporting shop in the morning , and on my way home pick up a few more in PARDEESHA store.  Whoever is making these flies, you are the SHIZ.  you probably have 300 dollars of mine that i've donated purchasing these flies.  and for christmas Santa is coming over with my kit to make flies.
Big ups to the folks tying these flies cause they friggin work. Much props to the creator of this web-site. Mr.Bono and Mr. Bigelow. and Steve, who always reminds me to fill out the survey evetime i fish.
Hope to meet Bono and Bigelow soon, you folks are GODS of PUTAH.smile

2008 Recap
I put in most of my time on the Lower Yuba.  The highlight was a 24" Rainbow in July.  I am so looking forward to the '09 Skwala hatch.

January was a good month for Lower American River Steelhead. I caught a bunch of mid-sized hens (no bucks for whatever reason).

I fished aggressively for American Shad in late April and early May before the American River was blown out.  I caught every fish that season using my two handed rods.

I spent an extended weekend fishing the wild trout section of the East Carson and the Rosachi Ranch section of the East Walker.  It was good times with pissy fish.

October 5 was my very first day ever fishing Putah.  It was satisfying to catch a few wild "shakers."  Since then, I have made 7 trips with good results.

My tally of fishing days is 42 which is my lowest in the past 5 years.  By looking at the calendar, I possibly can get three more days in.

2009 Goals?  That's a topic for another discussion.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Although I could count the number of trips this year on my two hands, it was definitely my funnest year of fly fishing. Got to hit up the American, Yuba, Trinity, and Little Truckee all for the first time. I didn't do too good at Putah, but great success at the Trinity and Little Truckee made up for that. Also, had the pleasure to fish with Emerger, Shon, Brian, Packrat, Black Cloud, JT, and Chuck...All great guys to fish with.
Merry Fishmas to all and to all a good fight.

Just like thank you all for all of the nice comments but I really deserve minimal credit for this site. This site was the idea of Kieths when he hired me as a guide years ago,I thought it was crazy to have a site dedicated to Putah and really never thought it would be very popular.Well with almost 900 registered members ( and still growing) and consistantly ranking as one of the top 30 flyfishing websites world wide I was obviously WRONG!So the real thanks go out to Kieth and his continued monitoring and upkeep and thanks to all of the members for the interest in this site and the health of our beloved Putah. I really believe we have made Putah a better place to fish or just visit by bringing an awareness and volunteerism that the creek and surrounding area has never seen before, and guess what folks, we are just getting started.Hope you all have a merry X-mas and a happy and healthy new year!  Greg Bonovich

I joined the site this morning, I got a good feeling about you guys.  I will be fishing Putah this Friday with a buddy for the first time, really excited!  Great way to end the year.  This year has been wonderful!  I have fished all over CA this year.  Favorite places have been the owens river in Bishop, nailed some real nice brookeys.  Spent 7 days in Yosemite backpacking, fished every day, new stream, new lake, loved it!  Hooked over 30 fish in Yosemite.  No salmon fishing this year, really missed that, hopefully next year.  I am so thankful for all that fishing has to offer and the relationships I have formed throughout the years.
One thing guys, has anyone ever been to the backside of Kent on Mt. Tam in Marin County?  There is a natural spawn that happens, giant steeleys are locked into this reservoir.  At times you can see them on the surface swimming in a giant school.  My buddy hooked a 10 pounder last week, fight of his life.  Little gem that nobody really knows about.
Have a Happy Holidays gentleman!

i am not the first to say that this has been my best year of fishing yet. I started fishing Putah january of this year and have had a blast fishing it. The highlight on putah was catchin a 23" rainbow on putah on a fly that i tied.  Beyond putah, i made some amazing trips this year. From fishing in the grand canyon, doing a fly fishing road trip with my cousin and the best year of fly fishing ive had up in canada on a yearly family tradition fly fishing trip. This has been a very memorable year. I have only met otter and mattr but im looking forward to meeting many fellow board members in the upcoming year.
Happy holidays!!

Honestly, when I proposed the idea for this Forum to Bono, after a successful day of fishing with him, I had no idea it would be so successful.  I knew that Bono had a great thing going with his Guiding business on Putah Creek and that there were probably quite a few guys like myself looking for a quality trout stream close to home.

However, I never imagined eventually having almost 900 members of this Forum, and having almost 14,000 posts with an average of 200+ visitors a day to this site.

This is such a great group of men and women sharing their love of fly fishing that it's a pleasure to manage this Forum.  It's takes a lot of time and effort to manage everything that goes on here, but it's definitely worth it especially when I see organizations like Putah Creek Trout formed by a group of Forum members. It's also a genuine pleasure to watch so many friendships develop here and to have personally met many of you. I hope to meet many more.

I really enjoy reading "most" confuse of the posts here and have learned a lot from you all and have enjoyed following along on your adventures.

My wish for 2009 is for an improved Putah Creek and more "Tight Lines and Gentle Releases" for you all.

Who would believe that this site is what it is???????  This site promotes a small tailwater fishery near the Bay area!!!  Well,  I certainly enjoy the info that I get from this site, as well as the humor, comerarderie and friendships that have come from my association with this site.  One of the 30 most utilized fly fishing websites???!!!!  Wow, what a testament to the 2 guys who manage the site and to everyone who has elected to participate in this site.  After all, a site is only as good as what the people put into it.  Amazing.

well its a great yr for me as well. got to fish a lot of new rivers, one becoming my all time fav the LT. got to fish with some great people as well. shaun, lil whipper, emerger, blackcloud, packrat, oneweight, jt, chuck the duck, dtp916, ac22, i know i am leaving someone out, oh ya cole, ez, lahontan, wyteurp and even chemdoc. and thanks to those that gave me a second chance.

who can forget about the truckee trip, man i crapped 3 times that day, and my ars was hella chaffed. that was great, and that will have to be done again. hey oneweight dont forget i still owe you dinner. i fished the stan with shaun, where the next day he ran into a bear. did 2 trips to the south fork american one with black cloud the other with jt, as well as one trip to silver fork with jt, many many trips to the east carson. i hooked and landed my biggest steelie on the american this yr 35" wild buck, and the same day got ac22 on his first of many steelhead. who can forget about the trinity trip with lilwhipper and emerger, man we hooked into some hugh salmon and even landing some, and lilwhipper got his biggest steelie yet, and who can forget about my first brown, that was great. so many day trips that i cant even start to write, and some nice over nighters as well. but by far my best time of yr had to be these last few months when i fished the LT atleast once a week if not 2, and just killed some big browns and rainbows. fished it with jt, lilwhipper, and blackcloud, even brought a newbie up there to and got him on some fish as well. got into some beautiful browns, some well into the mid 20s, my largest being 25"s. and hooking many more bigger than that. lilwhipper getting into his biggest browny at 22" and his biggest rainbow at 21", jt gettin into the 22-23" area as well. and well as always me and jt pushing the envelope when we are using our 3wts up there. what a trip.

i am just glad that i was able to get out and fish as much as i did, even though work is slow. got to fish with some great guys, and some guys that never hooked into big browns of big fish in general. cant wait till the new yr and start it all over again.

for those that i have fished with it was a pleasure, call me anytime and you know i am up for anytrip you might have in mind. for those that i havent, hope to see you on the water soon.

all have a safe and merry christmas as well as happy new yr.
