Get yourself a western united states hatch chart, That'll give you an idea of what to start with in most places.

The great thing about fishing in the Sierras is that you don't need to get terribly specific about fly selection. To break it down, here is a simple list of what you need.

Mayflies - big ones, small ones, light colored ones, dark colored ones, nymphs, dries
Caddis flies - big ones, small ones, light colored ones, dark colored ones, nymphs, dries
Stoneflies - medium ones, small ones, light colored ones, dark colored ones, nymphs, dries
Miscellany - smaller Woolly Buggers, ant patterns, hopper patterns

If you are really interested in matching the hatch, the Western United States Hatch Chart, as Shon mentioned, is a great reference.

he is right, you can throw just about anything and you can catch fish. but he gave you a good list. if all else fails throw on a san juan worm.

Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.
