has anyone ever used a pair of those personal walkie talkies to make your available when up there with a friend say ones fishing just above the bridge and the others maybe down river a mile or so. im considering buying a pair but would like to find out if the trees would render them useless. my cell dont work up there.
not sure which post i should reply to....the first or the fifth. If you buy a decent pair, like a 4 mile range, they work great, my experience has been is take what the box says and divide it by half, so a 4 mile will work for 2 miles. I use them when we go deer hunting and they do there job.
The rain is here......the fish will not be far behind

The distance is usually rated by "line of sight". I have a pair of motorola that are rated at 10 miles. If I was on an open stretch of straight road with no trees or hills then I might get 10 miles. You should have no problem on Putah from the bridge all the way down to #5. If you get a set get the higher wattage ones, they say you need an FCC license to operate them but I don't see how they would ever find you. I never got the license......

You are referring to what is commonly called ham radio. Yes it is illegal to use them without a license and following the propor protocal set forth by the FCC.
Yes, you can be found while using a ham radio and prosecuted for doing so. On the bright side it is NOT hard to get a ham radio license. Here are a few links with practice tests and information on how, where and when to aquire a license.
Being licensed and trained to use a ham radio has other benefits as well. Consider your statement about not being able to use a cell phone at Putah. I'm willing to be you could reach a repeater.

Just to add my two cents worth here. About 10 years ago I was out on the ocean with a very unprepared boater. 4 miles out his outdrive froze up. In afterthought I kinda wished that I had checked after he had topped off his outdrive before the trip. I may have noticed that he forgot to reinstall the plug screw. Anyways, because my Icom had the ability to transmit a little out of band, I used my legal call sign, out of band, to get us rescued. Someone heard me and took exception to it and I was almost fined $2500 and had to file an intent to prevent another infraction to keep from having my license pulled perminantly. I would personally highly recommend you rethink that action and save yourself unnecessary grief.
I also happen to own a pair of the decent Motorola 9 or 10 mile range 2-ways and agree with drifter's assessement of taking the listed range and dividing it by 2 for most open outdoor applications.
