Hey guys, I'm looking for a good 3 wt rod and reel combo in the 200 to 250 dollar range... Any suggestions? I've looked at a few in a Cabelas magazine, but I don't know how good those cabela's rods are.
Ive fished the TFO pro series 8'6" 3wt. I think its a sweet rod. It costs around $150, as far as reels go you should be able to find a decent reel for a three weight with $50-$100.
Just got myself an Echo Classic 7'6" 3wt. They're closing out, Echo came up with new series of rods for 2009. I already have an Echo 9' 4wt and love it. They go for about $100 now.
Got a Teton Tioga reel for the 3wt. They're on sale at a some places and go for about $100 instead of $120+. Made in USA.
I own a TFO Finesse series 3 wt 7'-9" rod and I LOVE it. It casts well and I have hooked some decent fish on Putah with it a few times. I mostly use it for small Sierra streams, but its a lot of fun when you get a fish over 12 inches on the line. The rod is $199 and I would check out Redington CD fly reels, they are about $75 and have a good drag system for the money.
I agree with bugger i would go for the teton, they are probably the best reel you can get for the money in my opinion. They are tough and have a great drag for the money, the only problem is that they are going out of business.
hey lil whip you should go and get exactly what i got. tfo 7'6" 3wt with a ross flywater #1 reel. you know i love it, the rod is 99 bucks, the reel was 63, (this reel is normally 100 bucks)came with a spare spool. i can tell you what to do with the spare spool that you wont need to get some credit elsewhere. anyways for another 50 bucks you can get the 7'9" 3wt, a lil stiffer than mine, but very very nice.
you know i love my set up, it hasnt done me wrong yet. let me know what you want to do i can get everything up here at great prices. maybe we go fishing and the night before we go get your gear.
i am thinking i can get you rod, reel, backing, and line for under 200 bucks, already set to go for the next day.
just shoot me a call. i can even meet you at putah one day so you can try mine out.
hey why you gettin a 3wt all of a sudden, did you realize the damage you can do with one. hahaha

LilWhip, I got the #2. Both should be fine for a 3wt, I went smaller/lighter because that's very likely going to become my favorite backpacking setup. Altough it isn't the lightest reel around, at this price, it's not bad at 4oz. But maybe most importantly, it is built tough and will be very dependable in the backcountry.
I don't worry too much about them going out of business (their web site says "Teton Fly Reels is currently going through a temporary transition. Production has temporarily been suspended as a new buyer is being sought." - not sure exactly what that means anyway), this reel should last a lifetime.
hey lil whip check out the for sale threads, scm has a 4wt bambo with a teton reel spooled and ready to go for 200 bucks, that would be a sweet ars rod. wish i had 200 i would be all over it like well we know.
