Headed up to the upper sac on wed with 2 friends, got there about 8am fished cantara loop which is some nice water, smaller than the lower sections. We all caught a few on dries in the 8-12" range. The water there is low so the best way to go would be dry fly indicater to nymph rig. We saw a couple big bows rising to the oct caddis, but my stimulator patterns were just not big enough, damn those caddis are huge! It allways amazes me everytime I go up there how big those bugs are. Next spot we hit was down by soda creek, which is a high traffic area but we happend to be the only ones there. One of my buddies hit right by the bridge in the deeper water and 3rd or 4th cast nailed a nice fat 18" bow. I walked down a ways to some nice pocket water with a big deep hole and got some nice action. I landed 3, 10-12" bows, missed a bunch of strikes, had a couple of shakers and I lost 3 huge bows in the 18-20" range! All the fish were some nicely fed footballs. The trick about these upper sac trout is they hit the fly "nymphing" so damn soft you just really gotta stay focused and pay attention to the indicater or the feel of the line. All in all it was an awsome day. I fish the upper sac a few times in the winter season ever since it opened in the off season and i never leave dissapointed. It's allways worth the drive.
Right on Nic. Sounds like you hit it just right, that place shuts down overnight when the weather cools. I was going to hit up that area two weeks ago and for some reason went west on 299 instead.
Right on ! I love that river. This will be the first year in the last 2 years i didn't get up there. The bridge at soda creek always looked good to me but theres always somebody already there. But theres great water upriver from the bridge, An especially good spot maybe a bit less then 1/2 mile up where the river make a sharp right turn, Bueaty of a riffle into a deep pool. For me a trip to the upper sac. isn't complete without a stop at ted fayes and a nymphing chat with Joe, That old guy blows my mind with his nymphing knowledge.
