Matt,

I fished the upper Trinity on Monday and Tuesday with Ron Keller of Kellers Guide Service.  There were lot's of Salmon moving up river, but the Steelhead were nowhere to be found.

Give it a couple weeks before you make the trip.

I had someone tell me that if your guides ain't freezing up it's to early for the steelies, funny huh. Maybe the bit of rain last week got em on the move.

Thanks Keith, hope you got a nice salmon for the grill.
Xnjb looking foward to your report.
Shon that's partially true but not last year.  It was T-shirts and steelies in the begininng. But that quickly changes in the month of Dec.

Matt,   The Fenwick fiberglass bait cast spinner chucker from Benicia.
Weaverville to Junction city is fishing very  very slow right now.  Maybe a few weeks  away yet and more rain can't hurt.     WB

Yeah Blue Wing, I miss chuckin spinners and slammin salmon. Maybe next year. I've seen a few locals down there lately catching and releasing a few. some non locals catch and keep a couple. some steel on a bobber, stripes in front of the bathroom, even a few butts round the pier. Its actually been really good.

Steelies are in through out the river, but you have to find them. This is the best time of year to do some swing fishing.

Sorry for the late reply Matt, I don't check this board all the time. Yes I did fish the Trinity and did well. Fished around the Junction city area. Overall the reports have not been so good, but steelies are in the river you just have to find them. As mentioned earlier, October and early November can be good on the swing. I used shooting head with muddler and some traditional steelhead patterns that worked. For nymphing copper johns, hears ear, stone fly, prince and egg pattern worked. Caught some wild fish, which was nice to see.

Cheers

Sorry matt..have not been on the keyboard lately.... I sent you a PM...

The first trip of the year was great got some really stellar grabs on the swing with a few nice fish to hand.
Anyone looking to learn some spey techniques I highly recomend you hit up Jason Hartwick from Steelhead on the spey.  Great teacher with patience who is truely pasionate about swinging flies on the spey.....

Was up there last week and got into some willow creek browns as well as a really brilliant 12# wild hen.  under an indicator....

Latest I have heard things have slowed down quite a bit...

just got back from trinity a couple days ago. fishing was slow but steady. Landed a 28'' wild buck. But it was pretty much only one fish per hole, you hook and land one, ready to do it again and NOTHING! All in all landed some really nice steelies..4 in a day in a half..talking to a guide on the river he told me last year they closed out with like 70,000 steelies and so far this year they are at 10,000.

I fished the Trinity yesterday with Ron Keller of Kellers Guide Service. Contrary to most of the reports out there, there are some steelies in the Trinity. I fished the section of the river up near Lewiston. I hooked 4 and landed 2 very nice steelhead, one 25" hen and a 23" buck.  Spoke to about 9 other boats and they were all averaging 2 to 4 fish per boat.  The hot flies were a black or brown stonefly with a red or blue copper john below.  All the fish I caught were in faster water.

Hey keith,
4 fish average is better than a big goose egg. This time last year I was averaging 10 fish for a full day effort on foot and my guide buddy was putting 15 to 20 in the net out of the drift boat with 2 rods...So I would say your report is very acurate with others ,but its a slowwer start than last year and the year the before...
now everyone stand up and do the rain dance .we need it  to push more fish up..

Nice to hear reports from Putah people. So far I've been up twice and damn I love steelhead.  I had me a WILD friday couple weeks ago up there.  Here's a good one with JT's little rubber leg stone I got from the swap. Damn fine fly Thanks.   Good Luck to all and keep reports coming.

Fished it with a group from Napa Sat. and Sun.  in drift boats.

Fished up and down the river from Junction City.

Saturday we fished an hour down river, and it was the day of 1/2 pounders . . .  most had 5-10 hookups.   Only a few adult steelhead hooked or landed.   Sunday fewer 1/2 pounders and only a few adults boated.   All in all, the fish were only found in a few holes.

Lots on fish in the Indian Creek area, but they wouldn't take a fly.

A few adult salmon hooked and played for awhile til they broke us off.

Drove up on sat with 2 friends. One of us got skunked, one got a nice 28" clipped buck and someone dropped 4 of the 6 fish he hooked..
Drove back up monday for a little drift boat ride..my friend went 1 for 3 on adults and I had 2 for 3..the biggest was just over 31"
I got a report from a friend that said they went 11 for 18 but I wont call him a story teller ,but I find it hard to swallow...Fish seem to be one or two here and there. No big pods or moving fish stacked up from what Ive seen and heard...
