After weeks of not being able to get my schedule in sync with a buddy who has lots of experience on Putah, I finally made the time to get myself to fish there in the late afternoon.
I drove up to the bridge near Canyon Creek Resort. I saw a bunch of cars parked there, so I drove to #3 on a recommendation. There were fish surfacing which was a good sign. I saw a well defined slot, so I drifted a #16 Flashback Pheasant Tail (tied on a scud hook). After the fourth pass, I hooked up and landed a wild rainbow. It was around 11 inches. After working the area for 30 minutes, I decided to leave.
I stopped by #4. I ran into some hardware guys. I saw one guy catch and release a nice looking rainbow. The area didn't look conducive to fly fishing, so I left. I could have probably spent more time exploring if I had time.
My last stop was #5. I didn't get to really explore it, but it has some nice water. After fishing a few different areas, I hooked up and released a wild 12 incher. After that, I filled out my Putah Creek Survey card and called it a day.
I was impressed with the water that I fished even though I had limited time. I'll definitely be back to explore it further. What impressed me most was that the fish that I caught were very spunky. The fish would bolt and jump. It's like they have the "steelhead" gene still ticking inside of them.
