Please Use Survey Boxes for Reports
Permalink

From Putah Creek Trout:

The Department of Fish and Game has indicated that they prefer the Angler Surveys be completed on the paper forms at the boxes set up at several Putah Creek access points. The boxes are on posts at both Dam parking lots near the 128 bridge, at the Access #5 parking area, and just beyond #5 at the wide turnout. If you are fishing between these points, please take the time to stop in at one of the boxes and complete the form. All boxes now contain blank forms and they will be replenished on a regular basis.

The online surveys have been very valuable and the collected data has been provided to DFG for their use. We will provide a summary to this forum of the more than 300 online forms we've received in the near future.

More than 95% of the online surveys have been completed by flyfishers, the rest evenly split between bait and lure users. In talking to some bait fishers near the bridge today, most did not know what the Surveys were or why they are being taken. If you could say hello to them and ask them to complete a survey it will help DFG. A good explanation to use is that the surveys are being used to determine the health of the fishery with the goal of improving the fishing experience for everyone. At any rate keep it friendly.

I would just add that if you can't fill out the paper surveys, it is still better to fill out the online form than doing nothing. Also, if you have certain opinions about how the fishery should be managed, please put it on the survey. You can write on the back of the paper survey. DFG actually read these things.

Also,if you happen to notice that one of the survey boxes is out of forms or pencils or has been broken into (like the one at access #5) please let us know. Today, with Roger Bloom (Head of DFG Wild Trout Program) we collected about 100 or so surveys minus the ones that were lost from the one box broken into. Keep 'em coming!

Oh I have expressed my opinion on at least a dozen surveys smile. Once somebody put a really big frog in the box, I helped him back down to the creek.

I took a survey home and made a bunch of copies cause Iam to lazy to fill them out at the creek...I fill them out at home and then bring them back and put them into the box...I dont have to rush when I fill it out and it just works better for me...I also have friends who never fill them out and this way I can fill one out for them ....

Writing comments on the back of the forms is important for this reason: DFG's Wild Trout unit enters them into a database for retrieval when they are preparing documents to seek Wild Trout designation for a water. Also, if a number of the surveys contain comments, for example, about illegal fishing activities on the creek, they can pass that on to enforcement.  Their advice on calling Cal Tip to report suspected code violations is to tell the dispatcher that you are going to wait for a responder at the site (if you can). Because they are stretched so thin, they are more likely to dispatch a warden or law officer immediately if they know there is a witness to work with and help identify the offenders. The two rangers at Solano Lake Park, Sean and Chris, are also willing to help with apprehending code violators, if they can. (530)-795-2990.

As I was filling out my survey yesterday at the bridge parking lot I asked a few bait guys carrying a ton of fish if they would be interested in filling out a survey, they just looked at me like i was crazy, and acted like they didn't speak english. Oh well, I tryed.

The Bait fishermen I spoke to told me that they were not going to fill out the forms because they dont want Putah to become a wild fishery. That might be one reason they are getting so many reports from fly fisherman. Not to mention its hard fill one of those things out when you have harvested 3 times the limit.

Thanks for the info; I still think its worth asking; putting a comment on your survey forms that you, a fly fisher, tried to enlist bait fishers help in completing surveys will be recorded by DFG.

In the long run, they may be hurting themselves by not taking part, since DFG might conclude from the surveys that there are only few that fish with bait. Only time will tell.

I went up to the creek this evening to look around, and there was a stack of surveys in each of the boxes.
