Was back at it last week for another 3 days on the Truckees with nothing to do but fish so we fished from sun up till sundown. Fishing is solid from morning till night. The flows on the little T were down to their more typical levels for this time of year so we only spent one session there. stil managed some nice fish out of the little t. Just as we were leaving what do you know Black Cloud pulls up. Nice talkin to ya wished we could of fished together. How'd ya end up doing?
The big T was fishing really really good too. Must of got 40 fish to hand. with some crazy hard fighting fish to boot. even the smaller fish would give you trouble they are like lighting in a river. We were mostly nymphing but had plenty of action on the buggers as well. found a nice population of decent sized browns while slapping a bugger around one evening. Pics: some lil truckee fish bruce trying to keep em out of the trees a little guy with a mouthfull some sweet lil brownies
Matt, what a surprise running in to you and Bruce on the little T. I fished from the top down to the log jam, caught a couple of small ones. On the way out I fished below Boca dam in a small tail out and pulled out a 14" rainbow. I stuck with drys the whole time . I also fished some small creeks, Alder, Prosser , and Sagehen. All had wild fish and boy were they small. We will probably be doing this more often because my wife loves staying at Loch Leven on Donner.I guess I'll just have to suffer.
Yeah we fished floriston one late afternoon till dark. nymph are way up and streamer fished are way down was really windy that afternoon ,stuck some fish there but not as many as we did that one day a couple weeks ago. Than the next afternoon we were going to head to that higher spot but railroad guys were doing some major work all over the place up there and they temporarly took out the road to cross the tracks and they had so much equipment down there there was nowhere to park. so we found another access road higher up and fished that just up a mile or so. good deep crazy water with some fish not alot it seemed but worth another look sometime for sure. Spent most of our time fished up higher in the river around hirschdale, in the loop, and even above the town of truckee. Black Cloud that was a surprise and a tough day on the L truckee as the flows had just dropped the day before we fished it. Good job stickin fish on dries. Not sure I'll make it up there again until the snow falls, unless the Trinity steel holds out this oct. than I might but I hope not. I need some steel on the end of my line.
Hey Matt, you know the deal . . . when the little T gets that slow, it's time to put the secret fly fishing technique to use!!!! I hope you stopped at the Blue Coyote and kept the beer tap oiled for us. Sounds like 3 more days of great times. Man, I'm jealous. We've gotten so damn busy at work right now, my only chance is to make some quuick hitters for a day or half day. I'll probably do a weekend on the Yuba and NF Yuba in October when the October Caddis comes out. Downieville is a blast to stay in as well. Nice pictures!
Bob yes we made one stop at the coyote, taps are working great and so are the cute waitresses. As for the little T technique well being sworn to secrecy thats all I can say. but it still works......... October Caddis I love them, they look like little helicopters flying around.
A little early reconnaissance for you up on the NF Yuba.
Ran up last weekend and fished above Ladies Canyon on up and did very well. Lots of fish responding to a simple dropper rig; #12 orange bodied Stimulator, plus a #18 bead-head Prince Nymph. They hit both throughout the afternoon, into the evening. Pretty much stayed with this rig all weekend.
Water is starting to cool, fish are feeding again and starting to see longer shadows earlier across the river. Float your rig between a shadow line and the sun... fish were there.
Second day, did something I hadn't done in a while. Fished between Fiddle Creek and Indian Campground. I usually stay away from that beat. It was on fire! Caught beautiful wild 'bows all day just like the silvery guy in the picture. Same rig. Same technique. Drift the Stim, then swing the Prince. They even hit the Stim on the swing. Go figure.
Didn't see a soul on the water all day, campgrounds were mercifully empty and the weather was perfect. So was the bottle of Cab Franc on Saturday night around the fire. One glass, no waiting.
This is my favorite time on the NF Yuba. Heading up again.
iFish, I know that it wasn't meant for me but thanks for the tips. I'm heading up to the NF on Fri for 3 - 4 days and will be staying at Indian Valley, but will fish a few areas while I'm there. The forecast is for some showers on Fri & Sat, likely not enough to muddy the river much but I have a question.
Do you switch tactics in the rain, fish different areas, fish the bottom or perhaps switch to terrestials? Or is the only difference that your head gets as wet as your feet?
Thats a nice fish for that river ifish sounds like a great time. CaBrit, theres no way that the river will muddy with what is forecasted. Heres my opinion on this weekends weather, if it rains or is overcast the BWO's will be hatching nicely, they love that cooler wet weather. This should be a very good weekend to fish werever one decides to go. That is just my opinion and what I have learned from my own observations.
Thanks for the info. I agree, I find the fall fishing on NF Yuba to be really good. The Brownies come up from Bullard's Bar to spawn in the lower reaches of the river pretty soon, and you can get into some big fish. That Cab Franc sounds like a good evening potion as well, although on a cool fall evening, I might even go into a Syrah!
I think Shawn hit the weather on the button. It takes alot of rain to muddy up the NF Yuba. This splash, if it even hits, should be nothin'. It starts getting really pretty up there now, with all of the aspens at the higher elevation. Again, thanks for the info.
Oneweight... anytime. You've mentioned in the past that you have a appreciation for this river, as do I. Yep, the "Brownie Surge" starts soon. Haven't tied into one of them in a very long time. I'll have to think about that over a bottle of Syrah, this weekend.
Shon is right on, this coming weekend "drizzle" shouldn't color this water much. In fact, as he states, BWO's will be celebrating the overcast conditions... all day.
