Some of you guys knew I was going to do a little pre season steelhead fishing last week..So Iam going to reply to all your Pm's in this post...
The salmon are slowly making there way in to the river as expected...I saw a good handful of them running up and down the river.None that I saw were ready to set up on a redd...I caught a few on beads as well as some standard fly patterns.I would'nt say they are targeting beads yet ,but a few were ready gobble them up...I think the bead help attract their attention though.
I brought JL with me and together we had 5 adults and 5 non adults...We were only able to land 1 adult , a 28" wild buck..The other fish landed were all wild as well...I m pretty sure the fishing would have been even better if the 25 kyaker's had not paddled bye or the spear chuckers were'nt out in full force...I would have to say were in for another great steelhead season...

I have heard about the technique of beading, I know they do it in alaska, but I dont know too much about it. Without giving away too many secrets, can you explain it.

There's really no secret to it. All a bead is supposed to represent is salmon spawn. Generally you use different sizes and colors to imitate whatever eggs are in the water. In AK the fish key in on certain colors and sizes, but here its less important. In places where there aren't even salmon they work too imitating other species spawn. I've used huge beads on steelhead in AK and am going to try using them in CA on steelhead. They are just basically giant attractors.

Here's a link on several ways to rig them:
http://www.troutbeads.com/How_To.html

You can also buy them from trout beads. They are the supplier for most of the beads for this purpose.

I buy most of my beads from troutbeads.com...I dont rig mine like they show on trout beads .com but there method works great as well..I suspend my bead with a nail knot so it can slide up and down...other than that you fish it like any other nymph rig... Another good thing about beads is you dont have to have a perfect dead drift to present them...And they are cheap to buy....I know for a fact size and color is important and can change from week to week....There are a few go to colors and my favorte recomended color is a 10MM peach glitter pearl...

the guys that usually fish that basin use corkies and yarn a bunch, but because there are no one salmon fishing (WHICH YOU CAN JUST CANT KEEP ANY, dfg requests that you do not target them, but it doesnt say you cant target or fish for salmon as long as you do not keep any) its great fishing for the fly guys.
