Decided to give the Yuba a rest and hit up the East Fork of the Carson with JMO32 this past weekend.  Tried throwing october caddis patterns early, but not much happening.  JMO32 stuck it to them pretty well nymphing early with a red copper john.  Around 9:30 a truly epic trico hatch happened, they were everywhere.  The fish that were sipping them made for easy targets in such clear water, nothing better than being able to see the fish come up and eat the fly.  On our walk back out we decided to throw hoppers in the head water, which paid off big time (JMO32 turned me on to a hopper imitation, which has worked well on the lower yuba during the skwala hatch......it looks more like a skwala than a hopper)  After catching fish around 8-16 inches all day (with an average between 10-12), we were finally able to get into some real carson river beauties.  JMO32 landed a beatiful 19" bow which took him for a pretty good run (theres a picture below of him running).  I was able to land a 23" bow, which was pretty thick to say the least.  All in all a great day on the water, got to love getting away from the crowds.

The guide wire is up from where we accessed the river, probably about a mile or so upstream.  That's about the limit to how far down I have hiked from Hangman's Bridge.  We didn't make our way up there though last weekend.

i have never gone around the been down stream from where you hike in at the 4x4 area, always gone upstream towards hangmans, i may just have to try down stream next time. i do know this, that are some monsters in the canyon, i have seen them when i first started fly fishing but could never get them to bit. man i cant wait to get back to cali. i am looking foward to some yuba and feather trips, the AR ofcourse, trinity and a few other small streams that i know about, and well dont forget about putah.
