I made it up to the creek for a couple of hours this afternoon.  The flows were in the low 500's.  I fished the hottest part of the day, thinking that I was wasting my time.  I was glad I left the waders at home.  The water felt great.  I hadn't fished Putah in a few months, but the creek didn't disappoint today.  I landed a couple of nice fish and hooked a few others, including a typical hook straightener.  There was a decent mayfly hatch coming off and there were the usual tiny black midges.  I picked up one fish on a #14 caddis pupa, a couple of fish on a micro may, but a #24 midge got most of the action.  Otter was right about the amount of weight you have to use now in some of the areas.  In one hole, I lengthened my leader and kept adding BB's, trying to find the bottom, but never found it.  I ended up using 3 BB's and 3 AB's before finally getting a fish.  Don't be afraid to adjust your rig to get down to the level of the fish.  Also, I can't stress one word enough--edges.

Sounds like you had a good time. I was up in Davis checking out some work on campus. I hit the creek this evening and couldn't believe how many bugs were hatching. Tons of midges and mayflies. Pretty decent caddis hatch as well. I also tied on small midge emerger and it was working well. With the hot weather the fish were in the fast oxygenated water. Good fun!!!

I was also out the same day for a few hours, and I caught a dozen or more planters, probilly due to the planting for the last summer holiday. Fished for 3 1/2 hours in the heat and managed to land 14 plants, and 1 10" wild bow, which was my favorite catch of the day. Those planters tend to bite anything you throw at em, I swore i caught the same plant twice in a row too. heh .. all in all it was a fun day out on the creek.
