I'm heading back up to Tahoe the first weekend of September and I want to try something new. I was floating around last weekend around Baldwin Beach and saw quite a few fish swimming around about 10-20' down. Lately I have been pounding the E. Carson and I'm ready for something a little different. I'm planning on taking out my pontoon super early one morning to try my luck. I assume I should take my sinking tip and drag some buggers with a nymph trailer. Has anyone ever tried for Kokanee? Any advice?
I catch them all the time. Just not on a fly rather in a boat with downriggers. If I was looking for kokes in Tahoe I would head over towards Taylor Creek thats their main trib. to go spawn in still early for that though. If you want to try to catch some silly big trout head over towards Bliss State Park. And yeah go with a bugger and get it down deep probably around boulders or something. I'm not sure maybe someone else can chime in and help out. But let us know how you did.
Hi JMO, If I were had to choose a line to get down 10 to 20 feet deep, I would use the fastest full sink line. The sink rate would be around 8 inches per second. You are on the right track with a bugger. Make sure to use something with lots of flash. The Crystal Bugger variant would be a good way to go.
anything that is lighter in color will work that immitates the shrimp that the kokes feed on..(like abelboy said, the old crystal bugger would probably do the trick)

Matt R- that's exactly where I was; Taylor Creek comes in to Tahoe at Baldwin Beach. We were out there at 6:30 wakeboarding until it got rough around 9:00. After that we just floated around eating breakfast and I started looking underneath me and probably counted about 10 fish in 10-20 minutes. Some Kokes must be staking up early because I counted 5 fishing boats that morning. The weekend before I saw someone in the same area catch a brown that must have gone 5-7 pounds. That would be crazy getting pulled around by one of those.
Yeah they stack up around there and come to think about it heck its september damn near its not that early i guess. Ik the koke boats are there the kokes are there. If you could find a way to get a big tahoe koke on the end of your fly line you could have some fun. The big brown needless to say that would be too much fun. Ya know I think your supposed to stay a certain distance away from the mouth of the creeks in the lake when fishing. Not totally sure that's in effect right now. I think it is I know it is when the creeks are closed.
how is the lil T for kokes in the fall for the spawn.
maybe this truckee trip we can hit some of these tribs.
what do you think guys.

I could be wrong but If I remember right all tribs into Tahoe are closed to fishing all year, at least right around the lake...I think. See what the regs say.
