Like MX19 yesterday, went to the creek with a friend at Midday today. Was slow, although we both lost a few small (first year) fish using bead head may fly patterns. As we were about to leave, Mike caught a 5" brown trout with nice bright red spots-the first juvenile I've ever seen on the creek. We were in an area where some larger fish were reported being caught last year. So, it appears some reproduction is going on, which, if confirmed by more catches, is very important for achieving Wild Trout status for the creek. If anyone catches a brown, especially less than 10", please post both on the board and report in the survey. Unfortunately, neither of us had a camera and we could'nt bring ourselves to kill it. If you do get the chance, take a picture.
Thats really good to hear that there was some reproduction. I've yet to catch a brown in putah. I'm pretty sure i fought one once but that's another story.
Any brown is good news big or small...5 inches seems small considering spawn season for the brown trout..Do they mature slower than the rainbows ? I have know idea...Any body got a answer...
At the end Of spring and the start of summer I was catching a lot of the 6 inch fish...I have not seen very many that size for a while now...Most of the smaller fish Ive been getting at the end of summer are in the 9 inch range and still have paw marks...A couple months ago I pulled 2 browns from the access area I met you at...Both fish were 8 to 9 inches ...I assumed they were first year browns...I have notice that the fish are fatter this summer than previous years..Anyone else notice this...I know Iam getting fatter...
They are quite possibly first year fish; even if 2nd year, the great thing is they almost have to be native fish. Some of the criteria used by DFG to determine consideration for Wild Trout status is presence of self sustaining populations with multiple age classes as well as trophy sized fish. So, the information we provide here about size, etc., of young fish is not in any way official "data" (and might not even be looked at by DFG), but it helps build the picture we need.
Tight line nymphing is a sure way to catch lots of small fish (and a few nice ones). I've been hooking lots of 6-9 inch fish, though never a brown.
MX - you know, at night, i've been hooking up with larger fish on dries. The small ones aren't around like they were mid-summer. So I think they ARE growing out of their juvy status.
