Hi Richard,
Have you considered doing business with a local fly fishing shop?  Every fly shop that I know of has some sort of introductory class.  Usually this type of class will cover gear selection, knots, basic entomology, and basic casting at a fairly reasonable cost.  Many shops also have on the water instruction programs, too.  If you have a shop in your area, look it up.

One of my fishing buddies runs an instruction program at the local shop that I do business with here in the Sacramento region.  If you want contact information, shoot me a PM.

...I'm not from your area but there is Sweeneys Sports store in Napa.
I have been there a few times and I am sure they are more than willing to help. When you recieve your rod and reel, Take it with you when you go visit them and tell them where and what you want to fish for and ask other pertinent questions. They will inform you of what you will need. Just don't forget to buy a couple of flies from them.       Have Fun Fishing!

Richard,
I sent you an e-mail in regards to instruction.

A PM is a private message.  To send one, click the person's name on the board.  In the next window, click the "send message" link.  From there I think you can figure it out.

If you have received a private message, you will see a notification by your screen name at the "logged in as" area.

Richard:I am the person who is responsible for the creation and continuation of this web site.I am also a local instuctor and guide on Putah and have been for years,I think some of the members of the site forget that when they promote themselves or others on the forum.I  too do introductory classes on Putah as well as more advanced intricate stuff and would be happy to help.I know that I dont post as much as some of the regulars, but I do monitor the site almost every day and chime in periodically.Considering this site cost me $$ to keep it running I figured maybe its time that I promote my business as well.Oh by the way if you're looking for a good fly shop everyone is right Sweenys is the place in you're hometown that will provide everything you need.Good luck with you're new endevour and call me if you're interested in some instuction.Greg 707-480-3809
