I went out today with my gf cousins, their third time fishing. I got out to solano park in the mourning. there were fish jumping everywhere and a lot of them looked to be a really good size. unfortunately I didn't have my fly rod cause the youngsters don't fly fish. so I tried everything I had and even bought some flys from the local shop and set it up spin cast style and still nothing. it was driving me crazy. I also seen a few browns clearing the water about 5 feet out from me. did anyone have any luck because none of the baiters I had seen werent catching anything. it seemed the fish were just teasing us.
Alot of the fish you see rising in the lower parts of the creek and the lake are actually carp, Not to say what you saw were not trout. Just my own observation.
I have seen the fish down there focusing on mayfly spinners. It will drive you nuts, because you can't tell what they're taking. I've been out in my float tube only to find the bottom of my tube covered in spinners when I got out of the water. If I had only known when I was still in the water.

ya I thought they may have been carp but I saw them pretty clearly when I walked across the bridge. they also were jumping clear out of the water. ya they could have been eating spinners but do they come at those things with such aggressiveness. I have never seen them so active but so unwilling to take anything. I was also surprised to see as many brown trout as I seen yesterday. next time ill try the spinners that's a good idea jt.
I've had the same experience down there (last summer??).. I put on everything that I had in my box, but I didnt have any spinners. =( I dont believe they were carp because of the manner they were moving was very trout like.
Really, brown trout just hanging out in the open....The only time I ever site a brown is during their spawn and not often ....If you did see them then you need to fill out a survey and let them know you saw some...
Brown trout were last reported by the Fish Sniffer mag as "catchable" in Lake Solano back in 2005, probably planted fish. I have to agree with MX19-shy browns don't behave that way-jumping and splashing, but carp do. And they are about the same color.
Don't trout ussually take spinners with a "sipping" rise.
Wild fish will usually take spinners with a "sipping" rise, but big groups of hatchery fish are totally different. They are competing for food and have to get it before another fish does. Remember, they're used to fighting over pellets in the hatchery. If you've ever fed trout in the raceways, you know what I'm talking about.
