so it looks like my gf wants to go fishing next week. ill be taking out the howbie float cat, and she gets the 2man raft. the plant donner which will be nice for her, but i have never fished donner lake before. i have fished the dam area and the back pond thats it. the one question i do have is that there is a creek that comes down from the mountain, it follows along coldstream rd, which i think eventually hits the emigrant trail up past the ponds up there, anyways it comes down the mountain and eventually flows right into donner creek near the hwy. has anyone fished this creek. you can fish the creek right there near the why or you can fish the upper park by going through donner campground to the back then drive past the pond there at the campgrounds then drive up the mountain, there are a few ponds up there as well which i have fished and thats where i found the creek. i never knew where it went until i was eating at taco bell outside of donner lake and i heard running water, and there it was. so i googled it and saw that it was the creek i had seen up on the mountain.
so anyways she wants to go fish donner, and really never fished the lake, or these creeks, anyone have any good ideas on how to fish them. we will have rafts so we can get out in the lagoon and lake as well. she will have bait and lures i will have my fly stuff.
thanks brian

Why don't you take her fishing and show her how to catch a fish on a fly???
Take one rod, some snacks, and maybe beer or wine, depending on what she likes and teach her to fly fish...Spend a few hours and then take a break. Its the best way to get them into it!
i have tried she really isnt into it all that much, she likes to throw lures and bait. some day it will happen. maybe with steelhead i can get her more into it. who knows.

Was out there last year around September just stopping by. Saw a bait chucker absolutely slaying them on some rainbow powerbait. I was there 10 minutes and he "limited". You could see the lake filled with stockers, and they were sipping midges off the surface... I didn't have my fly rod with me , but I would imagine some small midges under and indicator would work. Id bring some olive buggers and flying ants too. I plan on revisiting that area soon.
But yeah if you just want your gf to get into some fish, and she won't take a fly rod, PB is a no brainer.
Id bring your Fly rod and try to outfish her, give yourself a challenge. =) Maybe if you outfish her shell consider the fly rod. Put your skills to the test!
Hi Brian, did you get anything out of those ponds up in cold creek canyon? I think I remember seeing rises up there a number of years ago, I tried a couple times after that but didn't see anything since. Cold Creek is tiny, but there are supposedly brookies up in the headwaters and rainbows & browns elsewhere. Not sure it would be worth the effort though (tiny fish in thin, hard to get to water). I was at Donner Lake last weekend but the weekend boat traffic was crazy so nothing was going. It's a place I've taken my nephews bait fishing for planters. Again, kinda boring even if you're catching fish. I've taken my nephews to the quarry pond where there are a gazillion planters that never want anything to do with my nephews bait, but have gone for purina trout chow sized & colored patterns
Is she into backpacking? or a long day hike with some fishing? I didn't get a chance to do it but I had researched hiking into some of the ponds up in Desolation wilderness, like up Meeks Creek or General Creek, or even from down around the Fallen Leaf Lake area. Looks really good for weekend backpacking trip options to alpine lakes filled with fish and great scenery. Those alpine lakes are supposedly great for chucking hardware, and even if you didn't catch anything the hiking & scenery alone is worth the effort.
Truckee river could be the best option for bait & hardware for her and fly for you, the upper section towards Tahoe City has lots of easy access and good wading, the section below the fly fishing only section is bigger water with supposedly more and bigger fish but is physically more difficult to handle, i.e. deeper pools, faster water, steep banks & brush. I've only fished the special regs section and the rt 89 section, its good water.
