ok so ive been back for about a week....the fishing was was amazing we went 14 days fished 12 of them and got skunked once. I was lucky enough to be able to do a full day float trip down the snake river with my uncle and it was amazing. We caught a good ammount of fish and saw tons of wildlife. We started in yellowstone fishing in the lamar valley for a few days. We then moved east to a small town called dubois. We spent little over a week there and had a phenominal time fishing and hiking through the back country. We the headed back towards jackson and stayted in a small town called alpine. While there I myself caught upwords of 150 fish. Most were cutthroat with some great sized brookies, and the occasional rainbow. Furthermore i was able to fish with my grandparents and my aunt and uncle who all fly fish. It was a great vacation if anyone is making plans for that part of yellowstone let em know id be happy to point you in the right direction...there are more pics on the way.
I will be in Jackson in 2 weeks and would appreciate any info/knowledge you may be willing to impart. I have about 5 days with a decent amount of time to fish. I am hoping to hit the Snake any of the days that are not a full fishing day. I understand the afternoons are best (?). I hope to have one full day set aside in search of tight lines. Any info would be appreciated about any type of fishing (streamers, nymphs and dry flies).
I was recently in Jackson. The water was still high and the river running fast. I would check to see if the flows have come down in the past 10 days. The dry fly fishing will improve after the flows come down. There was some dry fly action for hoppers (parachute hopper, fat albert, other hoppers) but most fish were not looking up yet. I would suggest nymphing or at least a hopper with a beadhead dropper.
High Country Flies is a great fly shop in Jackson. They have an online fishing report with suggestions for hot flies. http://www.highcountryflies.com/
I would also suggest the Gros Ventre River about 10 miles north of town. There is very easy access on the road to Kelly, WY and easy wading. The Snake does not have much easy access unless you have a boat of some type.
If your interested in fishing around jackson i know Kieth sugested the Gros ventre, thats a great system well worth hitting another great river is the Greys river. You can access it just outside alpine which is south of jackson about 10 miles. For more local info thers a ton of fly shops my personal favorite is High Country Flies. here are some more rivers if your willing to go south a bit.
Hoback river- drains into the nake river at hoback junction south of jackson 3-4 miles travel east at hoback junction lots of easy public access
Flat creek- great spring creek right outside jackson in the big meadow that is just north of jackson....gotta stalk these fish but ya get rewarded for the work
Salt River- Flows south through the star valley area lots of public access out of the small towns throught the valley browns start to make there run to spawn right around now or later in sept. i cant remeber for sure but its a great river.
those re some popular ones with easy acess liek i said any of the local fly shops are more than willing to throw you some info if you buy some flies or tippet, etc there hope you have a great time let me know how ya do.
Thanks Keith and AC22. Spent 5 days in the Jackson area, most of which was family and sightseeing. Had to fish around the family schedule and my wife's morning sickness! Anyway, I must say I had some good action on the Snake, just wading up from the Wilson Bridge. Not much over 10-12 inch range (one 14) including a brookie, but fun for a few hours anyway. But Flat Creek, what a beautiful fishery. Great fun stalking and crawling after the trout. I must say I appreciate you guys telling me about this place as it seems pretty guarded by the locals, and I understand why. I stuck to High Country Flies website and fished to rising quality and did not fish for quantity. The quality of fish was amazing, only 3 to hand, but 14 and 20 inch trout on a dry fly were fantastic in a 3 hour time frame. Reminded me of the Owens in that the learning curve is so steep. Anyway, thanks again.
congrats on your luck on flat creek its supposed to be a real challenge for first timers. The snake is a hard place to fish from shore because of its imenseness but way to stick it to em
very true guys its not only an amazing fishery but the scenery is second to none even a day where you skunked isnt so bad.......looks liek you hit it at a great time kieth
