Deer Creek?

Have any of you been up to Deer Creek since Hwy 32 re-opened?  I've never fished it, but am thinking about heading up there on the weekend of august 16-17.  I'm wondering if the Fires had any adverse effects on the stream.

Also, any advice on techniques for this stream would be appreciated!

dtp916 said that they were not allowing recreational activities in the area yet due to the fires.  By that weekend the area might be open, though.

Don't know about what the fires have done up there but Deer creek can be fun. Lots of smaller fish but you always have the chance at a nice 14 incher. All the usual flies work PT, hares ear, fox poopah, parachute adams, PMD, etc. Scenery is great too.

If you wanna hit Deer Creek call the Lassen National Forest before going. There is basically a "no stopping" rule in effect on CA-32 right now. I talked to some guys who got tickets for fishing there. Apparently its been closed since July 1. When I called the Forest Service this morning they said it was still closed and it will be for "a while." What "a while" means to them I don't know, but to me, it too damn long!

Above Deer Creek Falls the creek is heavily planted and hit hard by bait dunkers. Below the falls is wild trout catch and release.

It's been a while for me since I fished it but my uncle used to fish it eons ago.  He did really well on streamers there hooking some pretty nice fish in the 20inch and up range. He would use 4lb. test and hook them but would give the old head shake and unbutton they would come. There's also ButteCreek if you turn on Humbolt Rd.(right) on your way to DeerCreek thats a great place to fish using pretty much the same flies Packrat mentioned with golden olive stones thrown in. You'll catch both Rainbows and Germen Browns in ButteCreek. access is by bambi inn turn right to creek or keep straight on Humbolt Road and you'll cross two bridges, you can fish at either bridge going up or down from the bridges. Hope you catch lots of fish and have a safe trip. Look for ward to your post after you get back. Jeff
