Heres a caddis pattern I'd like to share with you guys, I do beleive it is hands down better then the elk hare no doubt. Pictures are not great but you can see the basics. Would like to hear what ya think. I'm sure most of you have used em but thought if not it would be an execellent addition to any fly box.
Sorry guys I cannot be much help on what the wings are made from. heres a video that may help, maybe not, i'm not sure. Anyways I think this dead caddis is another knock out. I can't wait to get a batch of this guys fly's. I'm sure anyone thats into John Geirach books knows this character.
I was thinking that sure looks like a tent wing caddis or henryville special. My second thought was it also looks like Gierach's "slow" water caddis. That's pretty funny.
Like I said earlier I think it's a great fly, but I also think the EHC is too. While this fly seems to look more like a caddis fly one of the strengths of the EHC is how functional it is. I donno about the rest of you guys but there are a ton of things you can do to the traditional EHC to make it look like a number of different food sources for food. For example if it sink under the water... which rarely happens... you can always fish it as a wet fly.... something I have had success with. Or you can trim off some of the deer/elk hair and fish it as an emerger... take the hackle off too and it almost passes for a serpendipity (sorry about the spelling).... Anyways I think you get my point.
Shawn I think this is a good fly. I am looking forward to tying some up. However I had to give some like to the EHC.
I agree 100% the elk hare will always have a place in my box, Actually have a whole box dedicated to them. Also can pass for a terrestrial like a moth.
shoot i just realized that i have a few of those flies you tied in my box. sweet fly bro. i guess i might have to give the ones i have a try.
oh ya and hopefully ill have a few picks of my creations up on this sit soon as well. gonna have a bench, vise and some material on sunday. so moving on to the next step in the fly fishing experience.
