Hit the Truckee area for 4th of July holiday. Here is a brief report on what happened where:
NF Yuba- Fished 1/2 day here on the way up. Broke out the 1 weight TXL I love to use. Caught a lot of dinkers, including several in the 2"-3" range. I must admit though, it was fun catching a few native fish in the 10" range and have them pull line off of this rig. I was expecting to see some larger fish, but it didn't happen. For some reason, they don't seem to be out in the river yet. The NF Yuba has a good flow going right now.
Truckee - again, a couple of decent fish, but mostly many, many fish in the 6" range. I did see a couple of monsters in the river though. The two evenings I stayed on the river, saw no real hatch. The river is running a bit high, I heard it was about 350 CFS, and it seemed like it. Some Golden Stones, PMD's and Caddis are out and about, but not in any kind of big numbers. I read reports of a prolific evening hatch, but it didn't happen while I was there.
Little Truckee- A nice hatch of green Drake's and PMD's going on here. The dry fly fishing was pretty good all day. Fishing was pretty consistent both days here, and as always, some really nice fish out on the river. Being the holiday, this place was absolutely pounded by fishermen. The rule seemed to be to find a place on he river and fish the heck out of it. Got into some 16"-18" fish and a few smaller ones.
I'm looking forward to lighter crowds up there now, Especially in the fall for a group run up there I was talking about.
I'm thinking September. It could be Labor day weekend, that way it's a 3-4-5 dayer depending on how you want to cut it. If it's a weekend after Labor Day, it's one less day off. I don't think the fly fishing crowds will be too bad whether it's Labor Day or another weekend. What do you guys prefer? I'm pretty flexible. The weekend of September 30th is the only one out for me.
