Hello to all! I am heading to Beaver Creek tomorrow and was wondering about any good info that ya'll may have on the creek,(for example flies to use) -- and all advice is appreciated in advance.
Check Eric's Beaver Creek post. Typically, I use a yellow stimulator or Royal Wulff with a size 16 FB PT, HE, or CJ as the dropper. Swinging soft hackles works well, too. When the wind kicks up, tie on an ant. A good presentation and a generic fly will do...Have a great time!

My trip has been postponed until Sunday -- you can get out to Beaver Creek from Hwy4 Eastbound out of Stockton. When you get to the Calaveras Big Trees State Park area you go a little further up to Sourgrass rd and access from there.
I have never been there yet but I am sure you can map it.
The fishing at beaver creek was pretty good. I caught around 80 and rose around 500. nothing bigger than 8 inches though. It was really fun. The ticket was a size 14 and 16 parachute adams irresistible and an adams irresistible.

It's much more important.
That is interesting to me as the last time I hit Beaver Creek which was the first time I have fished it, I caught some good sized fish, and about half of them were wild. Biggest was a wild rainbow in 16-17 inch range. Trust me, I can tell the difference between a plant and a wild fish.
I wonder if I was either fishing a different section or my experience there was an anamoly? They were by far the biggest fish I have caught on the Western slope. I expect big fish on the Eastern side, but not the Western.
Did you fish below the bridge or above it. You could have fished the first creek. There are two creeks. The first one holds bigger fish but i don't know the name of it and beaver creek is past that on a dirt road.

I fished above the bridge. Some signs around referred to Beaver Creek so I am sure that is what I was on. I had been warned that it was a bit easy to get lost going there so I was sure that I printed out very detailed directions...
I'm astonished that you had 500 fish come to your fly in a single day. That beats my best day by about 450. But just for yucks let's do the quick math on that... I assume you got on the water pretty early, and fished until it was dark with no breaks for lunch or nature's call. Also, you probably used the same fly all day since there wouldn't be much time to switch with that kind of productivity. Let's say you fished 15 hours straight like a machine. That would mean you got a trout to rise to your presentation every 2 minutes or so for 15 hours. I'd say it was a "pretty good day". What are your good days like?
I'll have to check this deer creek out this week if time permits. I'm going up to fish the north stan and maybe a small lake in the area from thursday to sunday. Staying at the campground at sourgrass or boards crossing. Were those 500 rises or 500 rejections
It reminds me of the Wilt Chamberlain story. About 10 years ago in an interview, Wilt said that he had slept with something like 5000 women in the last year. Some guy did the math on it and figured out that Wilt was with a women for every 12 minutes that he was awake during that year!!!! It was hilarious.
Regardless, I have only fished up there at Ganns Meadow, off HWY 4 once, about 25 years ago, so i don't know this area at all. I remember it was a total ball buster hike out of there. Sounds like a great area though.
deer creek now thats near chester, hwy 32 if i am not mistaken, and have heard of some very nice size rainbows and a few browns coming out of there. the farther you get away from the road and campground the bigger the fish get. but they do stock some nice size planters at the campground as well. but who wants to catch those. hahaha

Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.
There was a good article on Deer Creek in the Fly, Rod 'n Reel about a year ago. Fish First has a current report for Deer Crrek in it's fishing report also. You're right Brian, it's right off HWY 32. As I recall, the article said good fishing all over the stream.
BTW, Deer Creek canyon is closed to all recreational use due to extreme fire danger, which unfortunately includes fishing. Don't know when it will reopen.
