Little Truckee 3 trips one post

hey oneweight just so you know the lil truckee is fishing great right now, i have gone 3 times in the last month, and have done great,

first time out was 2 weeks before memorial day (more for a scouting that anything else but i used wooly buggers for most of the day and did pretty well being my first time out, hook 7 and landed 2, one that i hooked broke my 3x tippet in one shake of its head, it was a nice size brown too. i had just tied up a size 8 wooly bugger and my first cast with it this fish came up from the flat 4ft section onto the tail out and hammered it, the wake was huge, i fought the fish for only a few seconds but i got a great look at it and it was about a 20" brown, as soon as i got the look thats when the ferosious head shake came into play and broke me off like i was nothing.

i then went and fished it memorial day, (only had a few hours due to camping with the gf hence the scouting trip 2 weeks back) well got my few hours in and had a blast as well. glo bug or glo bead with a pink san juan was the ticket that day. i have a few pics from that day i fished in the album. nothing to big that day, mostley 14-16"ers hooked 10 landed 5, had to leave early due to the rain but had fun either way.

i also went up yesterday with the gf for the day. tried to get her to fly fish but she wasnt having it. it will take time with this one but in due time ill have her handling that fly rod like its...... well anyways, we got there early to my fav spot as usual, (the only spot that i have been fishing the last few times out) hoping that i can get the gf on some fish as well with either small panthers or maybe some flies (this spot holds a ton of fish, they stack up at the bottom of the tail out just waiting for food to come their way, great location and great honey hole), she wasnt having any luck but i sure was, the go to yesterday was size 12-14 green drake with a super super small glo bug trailer, this was the meal ticket, took me a while to figure it out but it finally paid off. first fish was a lil guy that took my green drake about 14"s with great color, tips of the tails in full white, and just beautiful, the gf couldnt believe it, she is used to planters so a wild native fish she has never seen. i hooked a few more right after that fish all about the same size 14-15"s landed one but lost 3, the headshakes from lil truckee bows and browns are awsome.   about 20 mins after with no fish, i decided to sit back and just watch. and within 5 mins i noticed some subsurfice feeding, and a good amount of fish activity on the other side of this honey spot where its its about 1ft deep drops of to a shelf thats about 4ft then it goes deep, these fish were holding on this shelf and periodicly moving up into the shallow water then back down onto the shelf, what a site. so i tried working it from the side i was on with no luck, hard to get a good drift, i tried swinging a few flys and streamers as well, but it was just a difficult presentation with so much line out. so worked my way around to the other side. turned over a few rocks and there wasnt much, a green drake here a caddis pupah there, stuck with the green drake and a small glo bug combo. got myself situated for a perfect high stick drift, or even a swing if needed, and first cast i got hammered, the fish put up a great fight, man i love the lil truckee, finally got it to hand was a nice 15"er, went back to that spot a few cast later another fish on, same thing, nice fight nice head shakes got it to hand and was a nice 16"er, this went one for a good hour ( a few more landed and a few more lost) when i look over and i see the gf playing tetris on her phone, i told the gf "a few more cast dear" she said ok, and the next cast was the cast of my life time (the final cast) everything was in slow motion for some reason, my casting my drift eveyerthing and i couldnt figure out why, was i having a sugar attack, was i having heat stroke, nope that wasnt it, at the end of the drift my line took off, i had to loosen my drag quickly to make sure i keep this beast on, it left a wake like i would see if i am swinging for steelhead, it was crazy, it took off like a supercharged mack stuck, with almost 3/4 of my fly line out this fish bolted out of the water a good 3ft, this was a big fish, and very bright (defintly a healthy fish, i had my hands full) a nice putah pig size fish, fat and juicy. (i have heard of some nice fish being caught from the 16-20" range and this one was definitly in that category).... so trying not to put my 5 and 6x tippet to the stress point and knowing that i have hooked 3 fish on the same set up without retying i was really worried, i already lost a nice fish earlier because i never retied, so i had to work this one just a lil bit more. between the headshakes and the rocket ship runs i was sure i would never get this fish to hand, but sure enough after this fish worked me from one side of the river to the other and back again i finally got it to hand. the gf didnt know what to do, she has never seen such a beautiful, big, fat fish ever, (well atleast in person, she has seen some in my pics) so she whipped out the digital once again and took a few nice pics of me and the fish, i gave it a kiss and let her go for another day. final taly for the day hooked 13 landed 9. as far as the size of that fish of the day a respectable 18 1/2-19"s, with some shoulders to boot too.

i will have pics up soon, would have them up but got home late and was to tired to even think about uploading pics.

hey one weight pm me and let me know if you end up going.

Brian,  great to hear.  I'm heading up this weekend.  I have a buddy who guides in Tahoe.  I'm taking another buddy, and MY WIFE, to do a 3 day fly fishing bootcamp with this guide.  MY GOD . . . after 25 years of marriage, she's finally broken down!!!!!  I'm not sure if she'll get into it, but she's giving it a try.  I can't ask any more.  Now that our last daughter has graduated high school and will be off to college, I guess she figures it's time to give it a try.  She's probably more of a gamer than I.

Anyway, it sounds like Tahoe is really coming into shape.  After this weekend, it's one more week of work and then off to Montana for 8 days of fly fishing.  Everything is running really high there right now, so we'll see how it pans out.

It's great to see a post from you.  Don't be a stranger.  Maintain visibilty!!!
Let's hook up soon.

Bob

If you're talking about Panther Martins you'd be breaking the law! Barbless artificial flies only on the Little Truckee.

The LT has been a fragile fishery the last couple of years. That place gets pounded almost as bad as Putah. The fish you caught are small by LT standards, there are fish in there to 30 inches and I've witnessed them being caught on several occasions. I have a guide buddy who lives in Tahoe and he turned me on to a real hot spot that has never failed to produce huge browns.

If you park at the upper lot near the dam, you can see rainbows that will easily go 10 pounds hugging the shore below the trail above the cliffs on the way down to the water.

i didnt know it was strickly flies, i thought i read on one of the trees up there that it was catch and release artificial lures and flys and must be barbless.

i to know a lil secret about catching big brows up there, but its not all yr round, you have to hit it just right.

next time i go up there ill have to check out those big boys, i park up at the damn every single time, never fished at that cliff though, always went down stream.

GOOD LUCK UP THERE BOB. LET ME KNOW HOW YOU DO.

The are near the dam is called the upper lot, there is a lower, middle and upper. I think the upper gets the most pressure.

The Little Truckee River is NOT flies only....it's artificials with barbless hooks. Panther Martins will be legal as long as you smash the barb.

The LT is one of the rivers I grew up fishing on. It gets so much pressure, those fish can be really hard to get come late summer. Higher flows right now should result in better fishing for most anglers.

Brian - You can pull big browns out of that little river!

i am still waiting to get into some bring browns and bows on this river, if anyone wants to go now would be the time, we only have about 3-4 weeks left of higher flows. so if you do just shoot me a pm.

thanks for the info james, good to know. my gf did get a few follow ups with the panther but that was it. oh well. maybe next time.

i havent done to much exploring on this river so maybe i will next time i am up there, but who knows my hot spot has really paid off so i just dont know.

My mistake on the lures then, I've just never, ever seen anyone using them on the LT.

I've never been successful on the LT with bigger flies like mice and buggers. All the guides I know who work the LT always go small and it's never failed me...like 22's and 24's. If you time it right there is a great green drake hatch that offers great dry fly fishing, usually happens mid june to mid july and is a short hatch so you have to be on with your timing.

Hit the LT, Saturday the 14th. It was a very slow day.  Only one piece of action all day, but it was a huge 22" rainbow!!  Got him on a size 12 Compara Dun.
This fish fought every bit as well as a Yuba fish.  4 good aerial acts and he got way out of the water!!!

Just afterwords, watched a guy land a beautiful 18: Brownie on a San juan.  Talked with another guy who said he got 4 fish, all on a hopper!

Definitely the highlight of the trip was my wife getting her first day of fly fishing in.  She had never touched a fly rod before.  She has a great natural cast, and landed 2 fish on the Truckee!!!! She landed one on a dry, and the other was a Brownie.  Both went about 8 inches. What a great start.

I had more luck on the Truckee, got quite a few dinkers on Friday, all on March Brown dries.  Got a half dozen this morning, one decent Brownie and one nice rainbow, mostly on EC Caddis.

There is a lot of bug life coming off up there now.  Many caddis, some BWO, Green Drake's on the evening.

Whatever the other answers were, I was never able to figure out.. . I guess I'll lose a boys trip or two each year.  The upside is I'll get more fishing in and she really enjoyed it.  I was very surprised, I figured one slip off of a rock and she'd be done.  Boy was I wrong.  She loved getting in the water and throwing the line!

Hey Brian,

Clip the treble hooks off the PM and replace them with single "siwash" hooks. Then pinch the barbs. Those trebles are murder on trout, even without barbs.

I have a few spinners that I have done this to in my "Emergency Spinning Kit". They work great.

If you tie yourself, you can dress the shank of the siwash hook to give it a bit more action on the fall or swing.

Captain, both rivers fish very well . . .especially in September and early October.
I've got a place up in Truckee, sleeps 9 in beds . . . I swear I'll put a weekend trip together this summer/ early fall.  I'm busy the next 6 weekends, then August tends to be dog days up there.  So, all of a sudden it's looking at September/ October.

shoot late sept early oct is the best time of yr besides mid spring. the reason is the BROWNS and KOKES come up into lil truckee to spawn. so you could have the best day of your life a HAT TRICK. you can get into some huge rainbows staging below the spawning beds on glo bugs or beads, and even get some browns and kokes too.

count me in.

just let me know so i can take what ever days it is off from work.

4 spots taken
5 more to go.

i can see it know.

as macho man would say

OOOOOHHHHHHHH YYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Captain, since no invitations are going out, self invitation is absolutely accepted as standard form!!!!  Gotta grab the bait or opportunity is lost.  I've gotta list thus far of intersted parties, I'll get info rolling a little later.  And by the way, the beer bribe was masterful, I'll roll for that like a dumb hatchery planter anytime.

Heading out to Rock Creek, Montana with 4 buddies this Sunday for a week of fly fishing Southwestern Montana!!!!  The Salmonfly hatch has just started and is in full swing.  My mind is kind of looking forward to that at the moment

Bob
