Yuba skunk and auto break-in

I had a chance to hit the Yuba both Frday and today.  A big zippo both days.  Not even a strike.  The flows aren't bad at all, but there is very little bug activity coming off.  Very, very sporadic rises.  Tried averything from dries, emergers, nymphs and evening swinging streamers on sinking tip.  The fish won this weekend.  Thank God we had a good day Saturday on the MF Feather River.

The real bummer was coming back to my car this afternoon and seeing my passenger side window smashed.  As I walked to my car, a DMV registration blew past me on the road.  I thought that it was important to someone and I picked it up to see if I could put it on whoever's car it might belong to under the bridge.  I was very surpised to see my name on the registration!!!  When I got to my car, I had my answer.  I saw two other piles of glass in the vicinity as well . . . so beware, some jerk is working the area.  They only took my travel bag and cell phone.  They left a brand new $800 set of golf clubs and a Z-Axis in the back untouched.  My wallet was hidden and they missed that also. They left a digital camera on the seat.  At least I got a laugh at their take:

A) 3 dirty pair of underwear
B)  3 used pair socks
C)  A 6 year old cell phone with a completely used up battery.  You cannot get a charger for this model anymore!!!
D)  1 Set of worn East Bay Paint Center work clothing with paint splatters all over them.
E)  3 smelly t-shirts.
F)  My toothbrush, razor, hairbrush

Unfortunately, they went to work on my passenger side doors with their tools before opting to smash the window.  The door is tweaked out and probably looking like $400 or so to repair.  So if you go up there, park out in the open, in a visible location.  Based on all of the glass I saw, I'll bet I'm not the last guy he gets.

By the way, I saw the submerged Jeep in the river just past the bridge.  That guy was definitely a canbdidate for a Darwin Award . . . what was he thinking????

Man.

That completely sucks.  Be sure to report that to the local police.  Last time I fished the Yuba (about a month ago), some other poor guy had his car broken into as well.  They didn't take his golf clubs either.  Betting it's the same AHole.

Seems like it would be easy to catch these creeps by simply doing a stakeout if you're the cops.

they could pay some person a hundred bucks to sit there all day with a digital camera to catch these prigs in the act.

Sometimes you wish you could catch these guys in the act just to ask them what they're thinking (and of course bust them).

Yep, you're right JL.  Hell, I only fished 3 1/2 hours, so I wonder how much I missed them by?  I would have loved to have some up on these guys.  My cell was used until 3:30 this morning.  My carrier does not get reception out at the river.  I don't even pich up reception until I'm about 5 miles from Marysville.  These guys must either be in Marysville, or the immediate area.  Being up at 3:30 AM, it definitely sounds like the crackhead crew. I won't leave my travel bag in the back seat anymore.

Seems a guy could make some money replacing broken windows just on this board. Sorry to hear your bad luck oneweight.

Thanks Captain.  It wasn't my day.  I got a ticket from CHP  in truckee for 65 in a 55 on HWY 267 in the morning.  Can you believe it????  The only break was I got ticketed about 100 yards inside the Placer County line.  Placer lets you do trafic school online, Nevada County makes you attend in Nevada County.  The Black Cloud must have followed me down to the Yuba.

Good reason to drive a crappy car... seriously, that sucks. I was at the Yuba yesterday too. Fished from around 11am until darkness. Definetly very slow all day, saw only a few PMDs and caddis here and there... but at about 8pm, I was on my way back to the car with a skunk when I saw a raiser and decided to cast to it. And then PMDs started to appear everywhere and fish started boiling... pretty cool to see a big fish jump out of the water to get a fly. Was a pretty tough spot to cast to... but seems like there was just too many real bugs around. 2 smaller fish to the net, around 13-14 in. Fished until I couldn't see my fly line anymore, turning my back to raising fish.

Sorry to hear about that oneweight.  My car was broken into on Putah Creek last winter...that's a pretty crappy feeling.  I didn't go back for a few months.

I hit up the Yuba a week ago myself and had no luck with the fishing also.  I don't know what has changed (flows maybe) over the last month, but I didn't see much surface activity and there seemed to be a lot less bugs.

FYI - I was able to speak with the Patrol Division lieutentant from the Yuba County Sherriff today . . . he actually returned my phone call!!!!  He said they would make their presence known their with more patrols & hanging out under the bridge.  They were not aware of the break-in's here.  Thanks for the tip JL.  It's probably all they can realistically do in this instance.

So i had a slightly different Yuba Criminal experience while fishing the otherday.  I fish a spot on the yuba that frequently has fish and game biologists doing fishcounts.  A couple weeks ago while fishing i was talking to them and I asked if they ever bust many people for fishing illegally, (as this particular area is rampant with bait dunkers), they mentioned to me they stopped a guy who was in full scuba with a spear gun. Luckily for him he had no fish on him and so they decided not to bust him.  On saturday, as i was walking down to the hole i noticed fish and game driving away from there normall fish counting area, and sure enough, no sooner than they drove away, out comes running some guy in a full wet suit, spear gun in hand.  I really wanted to approach the guy because I knew what he was doing (going after salmon), but i had my girlfriend with me and I didnt want to start anything, especially since hes the one with the gun.  It really rediculous, he has an entire operation going.  I saw him fish (or shoot his spear) for 3 hours, and he had about 10 "family members" (ill just leave it at that) with him, spread all down the river.  Anytime someone would drive by they would come running after him and tug on some line.  The worst part about all of this is, was when i got to my car, I looked over at the house next to the parking area and i saw the man, and his wet suit hanging on a clothes line.  He lives right on the river and probably does this oftern.  I called fish and game and gave them his adress and reported what i saw, and sent them a few pics there way.  I hope they bust his a~~.  Although the fishing was good that day for me, it was a sad day overall, as it was not the fish i had caught, but the memory of this loser and all of the helpless fish that he has taken that was on my mind.

Sorry to hear about your loss.  Based on some of the reported break-ins at Putah I decided to pull my garage door opener out of my truck and take my registration with me.  Hopefully whoever did this didn't get any of your personal information.  Unfortunately, I think criminal activity like car break-ins and poaching is only going to become more frequent with the rampant use of meth and the tough economy.

One thing I would suggest is that those who fish in remote areas invest a few bucks in a locking gas cap...I would hate to hear about any of you spending a day fishing only to get gas jacked and stranded without cell service.

angered.gif Some of the stuff that goes on around here is just ridiculous. I wouldn't think there would be many salmon in the yuba right now for spearing.

Oneweight, sorry to read about your car. Makes me sick! I've stayed away from certain areas on the Stan because of the smashed windows/reports of break-ins.

SCM, I completely agree with you about removing the opener and taking registration. Some very easy precautions.

Hey Drifter, thanks for taking the time to take the pics and phone that one in. That's the best anyone can do. Hopefully the can act on it and bust his butt, for what it's worth, that's so out there I don't think he'll get away with it for long.

yeah captain, not many salmon in the river right now, but theres always a few throughout the sytem pretty much year round, especially in the deep holes that are few and far between below the diversion dam .  The fact that i watched him look for fish for so long and not shoot any (at least that i could see), seems to confirm my suspicion he was looking for a salmon this time of the year (and maybe an ocassional sturgeon, I actually know people who have seen a couple below the diversion).

Really sory about your car oneweight, hopefully the sheriffs will do something about it for the yuba turns into another american river as far as thievery goes.

As far as fishing goes, over the weeken i actually had a great day on saturday while watching the poacher, but went back on tuesday, and I got the big skunko.  First time ive been skunked there in some time, maybe the tail end of that coldfront messed them up a bit, could have explained why the bite was so bad sun and mon.

I learned a lesson this trip about not leaving things out on the seat, even if it's a bag with dirty clothes.  Never again.

God I can't believe a guy actually spear fishing??????  You're right, he's probably been doing it for years.  I'd love to see DF&G nail that loser.  Better yet, drop a drift boat anchor on him as you float over him.  That might wake him up.

I feel that the Yuba is slowing down from the great spring that it had.  I got a couple of nice fish 3 weeks ago on emergers, but had to go through a ton of work to get them.  No dice at all this time on the way up and back from Truckee.  Very little action on the river.  It's not like the fish aren't there though.  I ran into Ralph Wood (a guide I know up there who guides the Yuba a lot) on Friday, and he had just fished 4 hours with zippo.  That tells me it was tough fishing   We had a good day on the Middle Fork Feather on Saturday.  Got fish to 18", and quite a few risers during the afternoon.  They don't fight like Yuba fish though.  Hit the Truckee and another secret spot nearby as well, but fishing was VERY slow at these spots.  The temps were in the 30's-40's  and there was sleet and snow all weekend.  Tahoe should be in great shape very shortly.  I can't wait.

I have heard that some of the locals around Marysville will use big grappling hooks to snag fish below Daguerre Dam. They stack up there and the locals know it. I hope the DFG busts that guy spearing fish. As far as getting money from him that is another story.

funny you mentioned that otter, about 6 or 7 years ago i watched a lyoung kid, maybe 16, get busted for snagging fish with a gibbs minnow out of the fish ladder.  Not really sure if its actually called a fish ladder.  There like these big boxes of water that progressively get higher and higher, anyways they are chalk full of fish and he was snagging them out of there, unebelievable.

believe it they were there in 15 minutes and watched him from the cat walk above then busted him... took all his gear and towed his car.
