Has anyone ever fished this along 50 going up to Tahoe? I'm heading up this weekend to help my parents move and was looking to fish something new. I have fished the Carson and just about every lake and their tributary streams in the Tahoe area but I have never given this a try.
If anyone has any helpful information they'd like to drop on me that would be great.
Never fished it but I remember being told that the insect life is not abundant. I think they stock it in some locations, at least they used to. Sorry, not much help.
I've fished there a few times and it can be pretty good. You have to put out a little effort but you will probably have it alone. The last time I fished there for 3 days and had 30 fish days with a few landed that were about 16 inches. I lost one shaker that was pretty god size. I was using 16 PT's with a soft hackle and standard dries. One word of caution make sure you watch your step, lots of rattle snakes. Good luck. now that I think about it I was fishing the north fork not the south fork.
Thanks for the info. I drove by it Saturday morning and it was rip roaring...probably 2x as high as it was a couple weeks ago, so I decided to hold off on it. I'll probably give it a try next weekend anyways. Think I'm gonna give it a try above Twin Bridges where the flows are much lower. I have stopped by to take a look before and seen some decent fish so I will give it a shot and let everyone know.
Another option is the Silver Fork American River which flows into the South Fork American near Kyburz. I don't know what the flows are like right now, but the fishing can be pretty good if you get away from easy access points.

I was thinking of adding that to my list also. I love those types of Sierra streams. The fish are generally small, but the scenery and hiking is spectacular. I have fished the Silver Fork below the lake and it fished pretty well.
I fished the silver fork right off of 50 near kyburz. Fished dries at dark. Hiked up stream a bit to get away from the bridge where it crosses the stream. Used a dry dropper and probably got 15 fish in an hour, browns and rainbows both, the largest being about 12 inches. Every first cast in a likely spot drew a strike. Typical stuff. Stimulators and caddis with micro may / pt droppers.
If you were to get to an isolated stretch, I'm sure you'd kill it. One word of caution... bring mosquito repellent. JL

Exactly JT, Get away from those easy access's and campground's. I've been planning to get up to the silver fork near Kyburz pretty soon.
I've fished the lower end and the upper portion near Silver Lake, and I've had better luck on the upper end. I think the fishing pressure had a lot to do with it. There are some really nice fish in that river, but you have do some work to find them.

I agree Jt, I caught a few nicer fish on the upper portion but it sure was tough. Had to do a lot of hiking, and had to be super stealthy. Thanks for the info JL, I can't wait to try it on my next time up. Has anyone ever tried it above Twin Bridges though?...even up the face towards Sierra? Like I said, I have stopped by to take a look a few times and seen some pretty decent fish.
