So the trout opener is about 2 weeks away guys, Its been a long wet and cold winter and I'm sure many of you as am I are just dieing to get up in the mountains and do some fishing. So lets here some plans and spots you all are gonna fish that last saturday in april coming up. I know some rivers are open year round now so maybe for some of you it isn't an important date but for me its the most important day of the year. Its looking like a few days on the middle fork stan. below beardsly for me(weather permitting). Its a great brown trout fishery.
Thinking the same--April 26th has been marked on my calendar since January 1!!! Even with certain places open year round or nine plus months of the year, I still want to head up the hill.
I'm leaning towards another Hwy. 4 opener, possibly with my son. Might check it out this weekend. A buddy spent a few days (this last Thursday-Sunday) around Arnold. According to him, there was still quite a bit of snow around Dorrington. Melting fast especially with the warmer weather we just had. Creeks were really flowing...
PM sent.

Dutchman, you must be talkin about the north fork stan. around dorrington. Fished it last fall with not much success, water was just to low, but it looks like a great river if the water was up a bit. I'm sure its flowing pretty good now.
I'm taking a bunch of kids up fishing on Hat creek in Cassel for the opener. Also to Baum lake to do a little fishing from a Canoe. These fish are planted but it is the best place I know of to teach kids how to fly fish. The fish aren't very smart and the kids have a great time catching them with a fly rod instead of salmon eggs and power bait. I also try to teach them the importance of catch and release. So, I'll be there with 4 kids, (not all my own), so wish me luck. Hopefully I can sneak away to the wild section of Hat creek or the Pit to do some fishing for wild trout.
thats a great thing your doing Tug. Everyone should take a kid fishing if you can. I'm sure they won't mind catching planted trout. I sure wish someone showed me how to fly fish when i was a child.
Most of the rivers I hit are now open year round. Some of the smaller stuff around Tahoe opens up, but it doesn't fish too well until June. We stopped at Mountain Hardware in Truckee, picking up some flies on the way to the Yuba on Sunday, and got some good reports of fishing on the Truckee from their fly guy. Apparently Truckee River Outfitters will not be opening this year, so Mountain Hardware is it for fly fishing supplies in Truckee this year. Man, I loved that place, too bad.
Hey live2fish888, thats great that you started at so early and age. My son is 9 years old and he has already caught a fish on a fly. Right now he still prefers his trusty panther martins but he wants to start fly fishing more. Too many kids these days spend so much time inside. I'm sure I'll spend most of the weekend pulling flies out of trees, and probably out of myself as well, but teaching kids to fly fish is important to me. I've seen a few teenagers up in Cassel that can outfish me hands down. Its great to see. Keep it up!
live2fish888 is one hardcore 14 yr. old flyfisherman. I know we met in Tahoe and fished the Little Truckee a couple weeks ago. When we going again live2fish? You still need to fish the Yuba man, i had a great day up there last saturday with big fat trout slammin caddis.
Hey Captain, that is one of my favorite rivers in California. I particularly like the Sand Bar flat to spring gap section. Will you fish right below Beardsley in the fly fishing only section or will you go below spring gap? Also I wonder if you can drive to sandbar flat or is there too much snow. That's a hell of a drive but well worth it. I just had knee surgery on 3/31 so I will not be out on the opener so save a few stanislaus fish for me. Make sure you bring some red copper johns.
Fishing the Little Truckee with you was a blast. That was a nice brown you caught. Yea we got to fish again sometime. Id love to hit up the yuba some time soon but the nest two weekends my parents will be gone so i have no ride. Wait till i get my license in 1 1/2 years though. Then i will be fishing the Yuba and putah every weekend....

Fishing isn't a matter of life and death....
It's much more important.
Swinger, Yes frasier flat road down to sand bar flt campground is a bitch in my car, That 14 mile road takes me over an hour, last summer i had to dodge several logging trucks as well. The fishing is fantastic down there, better then other well known rivers. I dont think there is much snow left in the area, I also have not checked to see if the gate is open. So this time i am going to stay at beardlsy reservoir campground and hke down river past the afterbay and fish the fly only section. then on sunday maybe float tube the lake. Last summer i did well with terrestial dry's, ants, beetles, hoppers. I've also hiked a bit down from sand bar flat and its some really tough hiking with no trail but once you get down a bit i was hooking a fish at least every couple of casts, 6 to 10 inchers but there bueatiful wild fish. i spent a week camping down there last summer and plan to do several trips there this summer, let me know if your ever intersted in spending a few days there.
I was wondering how the fishing was down river of sand bar. I'd like to try it some time when my knee gets better. I drove down to sand bar in an Acura RL last...not a good idea. I was also curious if anyone else had trouble with their rotors after making that drive. I have driven there in 3 different vehicles and each car ended up needing new rotors or resurfacing. Coincidence, I don't know. thought maybe there might be some abrasive material in the soil.
Fished the lower sac thursday and friday hooked 8 landed 5,biggest was 19". caught my bad wheel on a rock and rolled down the river pushing off the bottom 3 time till I could get my legs under me. when I stould up my wading staff was wrapped around my ankle. I swear some times my staff is more trouble than it's worth. Once while backing off a rock my staff stuck in the ground and I ended balancing on top of the staff on my rear for what seemed like 5 seconds. if I wasn't wearing waders it might have imapailed me.
Regarding wading staffs, I agree. They're great for wading, but I do more fishing than wading so the damn thing is so annoying. I used an actual wading staff all day yesterday and after awhile I just left it on the path and picked it up on the way back to the car that night.
Do you really need a wading staff? I'd need a staff to cross some of the stuff you do. I've seen you wade across some pretty tough water with your dog with no problems. Of course, when the water is about mid-thigh on you, it's already hitting my chest pack. If I was only a foot taller.

Some places I have been fishing lately, the wading is treacherous. Super slippery, deep, and fast. I normally just plow thru, I have studs and pretty good balance. The staff helps a lot but it just gets in the way when you're fishing.
Might be too deep for you buddy
My dog is getting to be a champ at crossing fast water. If only he wasn't so muscular and had an oily coat like a lab. Maybe I should get him a mini floatation jacket, LOL. I know Avery makes a good camo one too.
