Hey any one know anything about the flies size, type etc.. used over at Piru in So Cal?? Its spring break over at UCD and Im headed south? Thanks Adrian
i fished piru a couple times when i lived in so cal in the grapevine you walk down old highway 5 its really a strange feeling to walk along an old freeway like that with no one around.when i fished there it was in the dead of summer it was well over 100 degrees there was a good pmd hatch goin onabout size 18 the fish are small and far between and the creek was exremly trashed way worse than putah in the summer.i might look into some of the remote streams that come out of big bear lake also.
I used to fish piru when I lived in Santa Barbara some time ago (17years ago). If you are into hiking I would suggest you hike into the canyon to get away of the trash. Be aware lots of gnats. Take a flash light, I got caught of guard a few times and had to hike out at night without a flash light, no pleasure.
Fish are not picky, so your standard flies will work. Lots of shrub, casting is a challenge. There is another excess from the lower dam (forgot the name) you need a bike since the road is closed for cars and then hike upstream (better be in shape as its all uphill when you come back).
Most fish a small, but occasionally you can catch a 13" fish.
One thing I forgot, if you have the time go to the Sespe. It is a great little river, has a good population of wild trout and they stock it around lions camp. This time of year it should have a good head of water in it. Hike down a couple of hours and fish your way back to lions camp. Be aware of bears.
Hey flyishingjunkie, another SB transplant that knows the Sespe, Piru...and the Santa Ynez and the Sisquoc Rivers. I lived there for 25 years and left in 2000. Now in Marin county. I traded palm trees for pine trees. Maybe we've crossed paths, SB is a small town, at least it used to be!
I lived only 5 years in Santa Barbara, from 89-93, possible we crossed path. I learned to flyfish on the Sespe and fished the Santa Ynez and Piru a little. Love the Sespe wilderness area. I just moved to Santa Rosa country side from San Fran. Mostly fish up north (around Redding), occasionally Putah (duh) and Yuba river. Trying to figure out the Russian since it is so close to me.
