3/7 Yuba Report - HOLY TOLEDO!

On pretty much a whim at 9:30 PM Thursday night, I decided to blow off my golf game and head up to the Lower Yuba.  It was a good decision.  If anyone has time this weekend, get up there, the river is ON!

I fished above the Hwy. 20 bridge for about 6 1/2 hours.  Had 10 hookups, landed six and missed another 5ish takes.  The fish ranged between 18 and 24 inches, and were the typical Yuba Golden Glove fighters.  I love the fight in these Yuba fish.  All fish got aerial 3-4 feet out of the water several times.  The 24" fish could have run against Scharznegger for governor.  He was beefy and had teeth, a real beast.  I took up my digital camer this time, but being the moron that I am, didn't check the battery.  I only had enough juice for a couple of pictures.  You' ll just have to trust me on this.  Anyone who calls me a liar can't come to my Truckee outing this summer.  Ha Ha!  The pictures are of the first two that I got, an 18"er and a 20"er.

I got the first one on a tan Fox Pupah, the other were all on a size 10 yellow stonefly dry.  The fish just pounded this fly.  It was the perfect size, shape and color, that's for sure.  There were a lot of hatched stoneflies flying and on the rocks, as well as a pretty good PMD hatch around 1:00.

If you go up, 3 recomendations:

a)  Get on the river early!

b)  Work the edges and seams with the stonefly, don't get out in the flow.
Hit the spill ins and buckets hard.  Fish were aggresively feeding on top in the spill ins, not necesssarily rising though.  I was able to sight fish to 3 I saw working small spill ins, and landed all 3.

c)  Work the top with something similar to the fly I have pitured below.  Like I said, they just pounded this thing all day.

Nice fishies!  I have a launch pad from Nevada City so I'll be hitting it soon as well as the T.  That second fish is sweet.  Nice Cimarron too.  I have a CLA on my 6 shooter.  Great reels.

Thanks,

I'm a big Ross fan.  Whenever I've had any minor problem with a reel, their customer service has been great in shipping out parts.  I have an Evolution as well, I actually like that a bit better, but they're both great to use.

Hey Oneweight,
Way to get those hogs! hose are some beautiful trout. The Yuba has quickly become one of my favorite rivers to fish. I think we have inspired some people to get out there and hit the water!!

I think I'm going to hit it again this Friday, gotta go back!  The follow up trips never seem to measure up to the good ones, but I've gotta get back.  Anyone interested and want to hook up, I'm up for making plans.

That river is on then off the next day. I went on Saturday the 8th and didn't even get a bite in 8 hours between me and my buddy.

I spoke with a few other guys while I was on the river Friday, and they got 1-2 apiece.  I set one guy up with the fly I was hitting on, and he nailed a couple pretty quickly with that fly.  This fly, or similar ones should have worked out OK I would think, but things do change from day to day, that's for sure
