The pics of the winter stonefly on that site look exactly like the one I photographed. They were everywhere today boys--all over the stones, grass, trees, and flying around. They were all over me too. Time to tie up some stonefly nymphs
There are some nice photos at Troutnut http://www.troutnut.com/hatch/963/Stonefly-Capniidae-Tiny-Winter-Blacks. The nymphs look like small golden stones. I have heard that stoneflies are a sign of healthy stream. The other thing is maybe they were washed down Cold Creek with the storms. Either way it is nice to see stoneflies in the creek.
I have to agree with Otter, on the healthy stream thing. They are very hearty bugs, living up to two or two and 1/2 years as nymphs along the stream bottom. But they only thrive in perfect trout conditions. They are a good indicator. If there are more than one type besides the yellow sally on Putah than things are looking up.
