I have fished in that area, I have seen salmon right at the dam trying to find a way past it. I have caught planted trout right below the dam. As a teenager i used to float putah creek from the diversion dam down to winters and there was at that time awesome bass fishing for both largmouth and smallmouth bass, That was about 15 years ago, bass are hardy, I am sure it is still good. To this day i have caught my largest smallmouth about 4 to 5 lbs and my biggest largemouth, about 8 to 10 lbs near winters. I was using spinning gear at that time but with a float tube and a flyrod it would be a perfect spot to catch a bass on a flyrod. Its defenitly a summer fisherie, the bass do not like the low flows of winter at all.
Yukon Mike, the creek is not privatly owned at any spot. Anyone can access it at a public access area and freely float it as long as one stays below the high water mark. I'm sure you know this. This is the law and there is no room for any interpritation.
In summer a good float is between Stevenson bridge off road 32 near Davis to the Pedrick Road bridge. Andy Guibord of Kiene's is an expert on the fishing there, from a canoe.
It is an overlooked fisherie that you guys should try. I know i plan to this summer. Nothin like bass fishing on a warm summer evening. TOPWATER !!!!!!!!
I have fished it below and caught trout, small and large mouth bass and carp (or some sort of sucker/garbage fish). I will say that there is pretty good bass fishing as you take it further down through Davis. My buddies dropped a small little boat in there a couple years ago and did really well.
Cool, thanks guys. I really do agree that it is over looked. On a funny note Last year I just about steped on a female turkey that was nesting while walking through the brush.
The access to the area below the dam is very limited,I believe a small portion of that area is public but the majority is private so be careful. Also that area has a good population of mud snails so please follow the same precautions we all do in upper Putah either dedicating a pair of boots to mud snail waters or freezing them.
