wading boots ?

Since I basically tore the sole of one of my boots today I think its time for some new ones. So would like to here what you guys are using and how you like em. I've been using some cheap hodgman boots, I guess I'm lucky to get 2 years use out of em. I'm eyeing some simms freestone boots. Also what size boot do you use compared to what your actual shoe size is ?

Hey Captain I actually have a pair of Simms Freestone studded and Simms L2 studded.  I like both of them, but us the Freestones only on Putah because of the mudsnails.  The one thing I do like more about the Freestone boots is they are wider and easier to wade in, but they do weigh a little more.  They both fit me the same as regular shoes as far as sizes go.
I got my L2 boots at a fly show for half price, you may want to check out the show in Pleasanton later this month for deals.  I hope that information helps you.

I use Simms Freestone studded boots.  They're pretty nice boots.  The felt bottoms are glued AND sown to the boot, where the cheaper ones are just glued.  They should theoretically last longer.  I wear a size 10.5 shoe and size 11 wading boot.  Wear waders or neopene socks when you try on the boots to make sure you get the right size.

I have the Simms Rivertek, my first real wading boots so I can't say if they are better or worse than other models. But I like them. They are much wider than the Freestone, which was essential for me. I got them at like 20 or 30 % off at my local fly shop last November, so about the same price as the Freestone. I usually wear shoes size 10.5 and bought size 10 boots (and I was wearing the waders I bought at the same time). So I guess the best is to try a few models(with good socks and waders) on and see what you prefer. I think Simms also sells studs you can screw into your felt soles, like 8-10$(?) a set.

I got three years plus out of my $50 Cabela's Ultralight boots. Before retiring them to the corner of the garage/cabinet, most of the major high stress areas were blown out, the mesh panels torn, and the felt worn to the midsole. I thought I had a great deal with them, until purchasing my L2s! Even after my second season with the L2s, they are more comfortable and durable (to this point) than my first boots. No blow outs in the side/toe region, the mesh has held up to fins (float tubing) and sharp rocks, and my feet don't hurt after a long day. Very easy to take on and off.

I'm in the same boat as JT. Wear size 10.5 -- 11 boot perfect. Make sure to take waders and socks in when fitting.

I use rubber studded simms guide boots on putah...I do a lot of hiking and the rubbers is better ...felt grabs the mossy rocks better but I slip and slide hiking around the trails in them...Its a fair trade for me...I also use a simms all felt bottom  boot in the drift boat and other rivers...I have weak ankles so I look for a very stiff boot as well...thats what works for me...

I have a pair of Simms aquastealth boots to which I added studs.  The rubber is good for hiking around Putah.  I wore them first time I fished Sailor's Barr since the A is now mud snail postitive and slipped all over the place.  I bought a second pair of boots, Chotah felt bottom with studs, and I like them also.  Can't say they are as great hiking on the rocks, but the difference is pretty subtle.

Thanx for all the info here guys, and girl. I went with some simms keen wading boot. There felt bottom, no studs and very light weight, not alot of ankle support as some others i tried but i like them, good quality boot. The freestones were a bit to heavey and bulky. I wear 9 1/2 and a size 11 boot fit well with waders on.

I'm finally getting some real wading boots. Capatin saw mine, and he knows how horrible they were. I'm thinking about simms freestones or cabelas guidewear. Anybody have a pair of those cabelas guidewear? If not what would you recommend in the $100-$150 price range?

No, I don't know about Cabela's Guidewear. Check out the above posts--many Simms recommendations. Take your waders and see which pair might fit the best. Different cuts/models for wider/narrower fit...

Anything is better then what your using whippersnapper. I'm surprised you haven't busted your butt and got wet yet. Waders and boots are important peices of gear in my opinion. I haven't used em, but i know alot of people like the simms freestones.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with the Simms Freestones. The only thing is you say they are heavy, but JT has them, so they gotta be good.
