Like everyone else who's been putting up with the weather, I've been itching to get out. After pouring over the weather reports, it looked like the snow level was going to be about 3500' for Thursday nights' storm. I though "what the hell", the North Fork of the Middle Fork of the American was worth a shot, if not I could quickly about face and hit anyone of 4 other nearby feeder streams in the area.
When I exit I-80, the tempurature is 47 degress! This might work out. The elevation at Foresthill is about 2000' and your drop down 1000' to get to the river. To make it quick, when I get into Foresthill, there is 1 foot of snow on the ground from Thursday night. Needless to say, I was happy to have 4WD. Dropping down to the river the snow level is only a couple of hundred feet above the river. All the runoff is going to cool the stream down big time. I get to the river, and it's 38 degrees. I brought a lot of clothing, so no problem. The flows are nice, the water looks great. I drop a thermometer in the water, and it's 36 degree water temp!!!! I fished for just over an hour with nada as far as action. I think if I bounced a wooly bugger off of one of the fish, it might have woken him up.
Pulled out and tried way down low at Ruck-A-Chucky, water still 36 degrees. Nothin' happening there either Driver's Flat road is not for cars right now. With all of the washouts in the road, it's almost 4WD only.
My guess is early April for the feeder streams and a bit longer for decent fishing on the Forks. I should have packed my boards and continued up to Squaw for some skiing!!!!
