Ahh, the real reason I pack while fishing.

My 3 best things to see at the creek have been.

followed through the brush by a wild pig

stalked by a bobcat (ok I suckered him in with a quail call--he made it within a couple of feet of me)

Years ago I had a mink within about 15 feet of me while I was fishing at the base of the dam

All time worst would be a toss up between poison oak (everywhere) and a tweaker threatening to shoot me with a recurve bow.  Hey at least it was a field tip and not a broadhead (he used that to dish out his lines)

I always pack a gun when i fish in the sierras but not usually at putah. Although putah has been the only place I have felt that it may have been needed. Plus when the fishing gets slow its always fun to do a little target practice.

Contrary to you're statement Mr Yukon, I have personally witnessed a few stray Kodiak bears at access #5 feeding on the spawning browns. This I believe is the reason we are not seeing the browns in that area any more.It seems the only time I've seen these bears in that vicinity is when I'm there picking(and eating) wild mushrooms!

Just make sure where you're at that it's legal to pack and shoot. I know firearms are not allowed in Yosemite. You're probably ok in most of the sierra's as long as it's not a national park, national forest and you're ok.
