Anyone fished it recently? I'm thinking of trying my luck there soon, for the first time. I only have a vague idea of acess points (below Tullock reservoir), and it's my understanding that I need a steelhead card and a bay stamp, and that it's C&R/barbless only right now. Any advice/info on the river, conditions, hatches and flies, or anything useful for a newbie would be appreciated... PM's welcome!
Yes, you'll need the report and delta stamp. Fill the date and location out before hitting the water--I just happened to NOT fill it out prior to fishing and the GW asked for the card. Ooops-he was very cool about it.

I fished the Stan today with one of my buddies. Did well during the warmest part of the day and then once the temp dropped, it was dead. Hot fly today was a red Copper John, anywhere from size 14-18. Got a couple of 'steelhead' and I got a big brown, didn't even know that there were any in there. Could be good later this week with the weather warming.
Nice fish. How close is Lower Stanislaus to A****er? Also, does anyone have a link to map of the Lower Stan.? I checked the Fish Sniffer site, but no luck finding a map.
The Stan is about 20 miles east of Oakdale, don't know of any maps there's only a few access points, lots of private property and canyon walls. Its probably about 50 miles from A****er, you're also close to other Central Valley rivers like the Kings, Tuolumne, Merced. All of which have trout and steelhead below the last dam.
Yes we were below Tulloch which is why its weird to see a brown. I think they are about as common as browns on the American, maybe there's a few more in the Stan. My buddy who fishes it regularly has never seen or heard of a brown caught there.
Wow nice brown, Chris! I'm glad you did well. All reports I've come across were saying it's slow. I was there Sunday, only had a couples of takes on a mayfly emerger midday, none to hand. I saw 1 guy land 1 'bow maybe 15", only fish I saw all day, all three other fishermen I talked to got skunked too. I tried the access at the dam but fished the riffles closer to the footbridge. Also explored the 2-mile bar area for the last 1.5h of the day.
Thats a river i've been really wanting to try, I drive by it several times a year on my way to the mountains. Is the area around knights ferry a good place to start ? Thats a bueatiful brown trout Chris.
Captain, sorry didn't see your post. There's really only three access points on the L. Stan: Knight's Ferry, Two Mile Bar, and Tulloch Lake Rd. all are reached off hwy 120. All the spots get hit pretty hard, esp. on weekends.
Onewt. the fight was pretty good, the fish tried to go into the trees and stayed deep, just kinda gave me big headshakes, no big runs or anything. I think the drive is about 2 hrs from Pleasanton which is where my buddy was coming from. Its about 30 mins further than Putah.
