well generally speaking 2pc rods are fast action 4pc rods are medium fast action. i use both for steelies and salmon. either will work fine for steelies.

Not necessarily. 4pc rods were designed as travel rods. When they first came out, the ferrule systems were not as good, and the multiple piece rods were more stiff at the junctions. With modern ferrule systems there isn't much noticable difference, except one is much easier to transport.

Huh?
Use whatever rod you like better. Like JT said, modern 4 piece and even 5 piece rods will cast and fish like a 2 piece. I haven't fished more sections than 5 so I can't really comment on 6-7-8 piece rods. Do they even have 8 "piecers"?
Just as JT and dtp916 stated, I too have heard that modern multi-section rods cast just as well as 2-piece rods. Just an assumption, but I think AC22 might be wondering about the strength of a 2-piece rod versus a 4-piece rod when chasing larger fish like Steelhead? I have heard of no difference in rod strength. Anyone know differently?
I don't know of any 8 piece rods, but Orvis does make a 7p rod they call a frequent flyer. It is actually a really good rod and is fairly inexpensive.
For the most part, rod strength is about equal for both. However, since you are fishing with more joints basically in the rod, there is more potential for those ferrules to slip and increase your chances of breaks. One problem I here from the sal****er crowd the most is that 4 pc tend to break at the first ferrule since there is a ton of stress there when fighting a big fish.
In a 2 pc rod this doesn't happen since there's no ferrule there. The last few rods I have seen break or broke myself have all been at the first ferrule on 4 pc rods when bringing in a large fish, every instance was when it is about to be landed.
In terms of castability, I don't think there is any difference. The new rods are so advanced that they could make a 20 pc rod and still make it castable.
If you're asking what we use, I use a 4 pc rod for steelhead since traveling with a 2 pc rod really sucks. Plus they don't make many 2 pc rods anymore and most shops don't even carry them since 4 pc are so much more popular.

Ummm....wrong! Did you make that up yourself or did someone actually tell you that? I have a 4 piece Sage XP 6wt and it's definately not medium action.
With a good quality rod you will hardly notice a difference between a 2 and 4 piece rod. What you might notice is that a 4wt, for example might cast like 4 1/2 wt. I know guys who go one weight line up if their rod is a 4 piece. I wouldn't even say that a 4 piece would break easier over a 2 piece, again a good quality rod like a Sage should not break even with a big fish. If you're breaking rods landing fish then that's most likely operator error not faulty equipment.
well thats what i was told. by someone that i thought knew what they was talkin about, thats the first person i went to when i was looking into fly fishing. well guess he was way wrong.
i also stated that i use both, a 2pc fast action and a 4pc medium action on steelhead, and that both have their ups and downs when it comes to using them. i never said anything about one being better than the other. like i said somedays i want the medium action somedays i want the fast action. i always bring both no matter where i go.

ya i know i know, i should have never listened to the guy. but hey i look at me then and i look at me know. i have come a long long way. but sometimes i still F--k up.
sorry guys, everyone makes mistakes and i have made my fair share and this one adds to the books of stupid retarded mistakes,

As a user of 2 piece rods, I can tell you it is no indication of rod action. All you can do is take the thing outside and cast it. For Steelies you definately want a 8 weight rod if you are going during the winter runs. Your 6 weight rod will get killed.
this is from personal experience, NOT HERE SAY, i us my 6wt fast action rod in the winter run without getting killed. its actually fun especially when you get a salmon on.

4 piece vs. 2 piece ahh it dont matter but I always thought a 9' 1 piece would be sick, just a pita to get to the fishin hole. anyways there's my 2 cents now get back to bickering at each other I love it.
I will say that last summer while backpacking in Yosemite my wife didn't get to fish much because she has a 2 piece. All my rods but one are 4 pieces even the 8 wt which I use for snagging Chinook salmon in the back out on the Russian. They fight better that way. I always leave my rods, no matter how many pieces out overnight to let them dry. Putting away wet rods can damage the ferrules especially if you have more than a couple.
so now i am not a real fisherman, i am dumbass, oh ya i purposely target salmon with my 6wt, and i use a large treble and i make sure to snag them in the butt, like cole says they fight better that way.
never once did i say that i target salmon with a 6wt.
i did however state that i have fished for salmon and steelhead with a 2pc and a 4pc. now that i did say. maybe you should read the post properlly before adding your 2cents. can you say open mouth and insert foot. hahaha
i have a 8wt 2pc, 6wt 2pc, 5wt 4pc, yes i have TARGETED salmon with my 8wt, and yes i have target steelhead with my 6wt and 5wt. get a clue dude. you are unreal. you are the only one on this website that posts negotively, and the only one that is rude.
and as far as the thinkin before i post. hey i said i was sorry for posting about the 2pc and 4pc. hey what can i say, thats what i was told by a good friend that has fly fished for a while, he told me starting out to get a 2pc rod, due to it having a heavier action than 4pc. and i also said everyone makes mistakes. NO ONE IS PERFECT. except you right. bow down to packrat he knows all. hahaha
a 6wt for steelies on the american river is perfect, due to there being salmon there as well. if for some chance you happen to hook into a salmon, which if you are a true fisherman you shouldnt, but if by some crazy chance you do, you will have a fighting chance to land it, but if not yes you can break off. fight a 15-20lb salmon on a 6wt is a challenge yes but can be done. on a 5wt you can just say "FO GET ABOUT IT"
you really do have some nerve i tell ya. no one can post something and be wrong with you can they. dont you get what this website is about, not fighting, not tryin to show off or be the better man, the smarter one, the one with all the right answers, no thats not it at all. it about education, fun, knowledge. if someone posts something that isnt right, dont bash him, or ridicule him, just tell him whats up, in a respectable ADULT manner. not like a 8yr old would. we are all adults here for the most part. what type of example are you giving to the youngster on this site. sure not a good one i can tell you that.
yes i have only been truly commited to fly fishing for 10 months who the hell cares. i have been fishing for over 20yrs, oh but wait that doesnt matter right. i shouldnt matter if i have been fly fishing for 50 days of 50 yrs, if you have experience and knowledge thats all that matters, i am the type that likes a challange, and landing a salmon on a 6wt would be great and a challenge at that, but thats not what i am targeting, i am targeting steelhead with my 6wt.
shoot i know a guy that goes out with a 3wt rod and lands 6-12lb strippers, are you gonna talk smack to him because of his fishing methods i think not.
my methods are my methods if you dont like them so be it. fishing isnt about landing fish, who can catch the most, who can catch the biggest, its all about the experience, and i like a challenging one.

look guys, who the hell cares if i have only been fly fishing for 10 months does it really matter. that isnt the issue at hand here. damn it. i said i was wrong, appologized for giving out wrong information. next time i will make sure what i am saying is right. this is freakin unbelieveable. take a lil mistake that someone made and blow it way out of proportion. thats the way to educate the person about it.
you know what i have always been told this by someone, and he is truly right
WHAT YOU THINK OF ME IS NONE OF MY BUSINESS.

In that ten months maybe hes learned something other people have not......even those who have fished for years.....Just because hes been in or a short ammount of time doesnt meen he cant give out advice to people who ask for help......
And you know what maybe he is wrong....that doesnt give you the right to bash him.
Dont be critical about other peoples opinions or advice.....even if it is wrong give your opinion why its wrong show evidence so that he can learn somehting to.....
thanks ac22. and you know what he is only 17. smart kid. we can all learn something from him.

packrat your comments make me think of my 7th grade english class today. I made a small mistake and some A-hole yelled at me. I'm sorry to say this, ( sorry if you don't like to hear the truth for a teenager!!) but if you have NOTHING NICE TO SAY DON'T SAY ANYTHING!! Brian is an honest nice guy who made a mistake, it was uncalled for you talk to him like you did. I have much more to say but i won't........
well the 8wt is weird, its a fast action rod as labeled but it has a medium fast action tip section, well atleast thats how it feels to me, the tip on my 6wt rod is much stiffer than the tip section on my eight weight, my 6wt is fast and my 5wt is medium action

THAT DOES IT! I HATE YOUR GUTS!!! ____ me senior? No! ___ youuuuu. . . You guys are killin me. A long time ago, Zane Grey demonstrated how to land a big ol hangin' salmon without a rod. Just the line with his hands. I think we oughta just get out the broom handles and wind up our lines on a bud light can.
