Some times good things happen.  My goal for the past two years was to catch a steelhead out of the Russian River.  In five trips I've not even been close to a wiff of a take. blankstare In Novemeber I tied over a hundred flies in preparation for this season.  In December I drove up twice and got a lot of exercise and a little sun.  On January 2, I drove up again with my son and two friends, and got my first steelhead.  aww  It ignored a large Jumbo John and took one of my glow bugs (an egg pattern).  I guess I should set a new goal.  How about being able to fish the Russian again this year, assuming it will come back into shape!?

I think my goal for this year is to join the 26-26 club, (size 26 fly 26 inch fish) I already have the 20-20, 22-22. Instead of trying to go for the 24-24 i'll just aim high! Who knows what will happen. heh.. Last year I set my goal to catch fish 20+ inches on 3 different setups, dryfly, streamer, and of course nymphing, which i did. but this years goal is going to be much harder, might as well be a lifetime goal.

i am thinkin, the trinity, some high sierra trips with cappy, if he will let me, find some new water to explore, i would like to hit the east walker on the nevada side, also pyramid lake, want to buy me a 3-4wt rod this yr, i would like to get into some big browns, catch a fish on a dry and streamer would be nice as well. also i need to fish the american more, i want to land a salmon on my 5wt and a 8+lb steelie on it as well. and the american is starting to fish better so now would be the time to get out. reading more books, watchin more videos, raise my fly fishing knowledge to a whole new level

other than that, just get out and keep my lines wet.

by summer i would like to have my 6wt set up, my 5wt which i have, and a 3-4wt set up, so i will be ready for most anything that i try to fish for.

Goal for this year is fish the Truckee and Carson, hopefully with Brian and Captain. Also I want to try some FF for largemouth. Also, tie my own nymphs.

I have a bunch of goals:

-catch and release at least 3 fish in the "MMWD" lakes
- catch one or more fish on the Putah
- hit the Lower and north fork of the yuba
-catch a steelhead on the russan or Gualala (spellling?) rivers
-get up to the high 'n lonesome for my favorite, dryfly action
-and teach my dad to cast w/ out nearly snapping his rod on the rocks behind him.
I might not catch much but, i sure as hell can cast.

Have a good year y'all, and keep them lines of yours wet!

-Drift the American for steelhead
-find a new small stream

Sounds like alot of people would like to fish the sierras more this year. I did lots of trips last year and plan to do more this year, Wouldn't mine some company (and split the cost) On some trips, But then there are the trips that are best done alone.

I know what you mean captain, a trip alone is something special. I won't have much time to do a mutli-day trip this summer but if I do I'll be looking for company. It's always nice to have friends to share a fire, and some good whisky, with.

More days on the water.  I'm not going with fish size numbers or how many fish.  More days on the water, those other categories will come, it's basic math.  I can't catch them with a cup of coffee watching TV. If that means some places I haven't been even better. Nice fish on the Russian there East Bay.  I've been thinking about a leopard shark out at Bolinas!biggrin

I should probably say tie more flies.  My boxes are getting pretty meager.  But when it comes to tying flies or fishing, of course I'll be on the water.

Hey Cole, You want to catch a leopard shark on a fly rod ? Thats gonna be tough. I know a little somethin about shark fishin in s.f bay, My largest leopard was 57 inches, My largest 7 gill was a 5 footer. leopards  are way under rated fighters, Those guys are serious bruisers. I bet you could cast a strip of squid with a flyrod and catch one biggrin. I fish for em around the oakland airport and alameda naval yard. Also catch alot of other fish out there, Stripers, california halibut, flounder, sea perch, huge batrays(some approaching 100lbs.), brown smoothhound(a shark), white sturgeon, green sturgeon, white croaker, Afew other trash fish as well, Bay fishing is fun. Maybe one of my goals this year would be to pull the ol boat out of it's 2 year storage biggrin. Too bad i sold my truck cry.

Tying more flies is the one I forgot JT. I want to push the envelope a little with my bugs this year.   I'm always learning and messing with those .  No sharky on the old 8wt. Captain?  I have seen pics of fish that look to be 8-12 pounds.  They look built for speed and I was wondering when I heard that if there's even a big enough squid pattern out there.

Cole,

You may have to go to the "darkside" for that squid pattern.  Here's a nice pattern.
