first time on the creek for 2008 and it will be a memorable one

fished my fav spot till about 11am then moved to a different location stayed there for about an hour wishing that i never left the first spot.

so this is how the day went, not to cold, but a lil damp, the flows perfect, just a lil bit of steam coming off the water, a perfect morning as long as the big storm holds off till about 3pm.

got to my fav spot bright and early just to make sure that i have it, and wouldnt you know it i had the whole creek to myself, maybe 6 cars at most on the whole creek the whole time i fished it.

any who, started fishing my go to bugs and nothing, so i switched it up, to a fly that i have had luck with in the past and has been work great lately, and a fly that i have never used before, but have heard great things about and withing a few cast bam fish on, not a big one by all means but fought like one, well fish came undone about 6 ft infront of me, a nice 18" unspawned fatty female, man did she have some shoulders on her. 10 mins later, bam another one, this one just a tad bit bigger about 20"s this time a male and again not spawned out, he didnt fight as good as the female which was suprising until it made a mad dash upstream from a complete stand still, lets just say i wasnt ready for that, and he came unbuttoned as well, man not my luck but what a way to start the day, about 30 mins later, i got hammered by another one (still havent left my fav spot), this one was a female spawned out and had that great orangey glow about her, she was between the 18-20" mark as well, her being spawned out i tried horsing her so i could get her back into the water and she as well came unbuttoned, but i tell you what for a spawned out fish she had some spunk to her.

now about 15 mins later, i was thinkin about moving and thank goodness i didnt cuz on one of my decided this is my last drift fishing here sayings my indicator disappered, it went down in the usual spot where i get hung up, so i gave it a few good hard tugs and it didnt move, so i slowly worked my way upstream to get a better angle to pull it out, gave it another strong tug and it was off, i first thought it was a twig the way it was moving, but then it mad a quick jolt down stream, nothing fancy but it got me thinkin, hey decent fish, probably about the size of that fatty female, so with my 6x leader and 6x tippet i worked the fish the best i could, it would work upstream circle around then go back down stream it did this for a good 5mins and at that point i saw a really freakin big dark shadow about 11 ft infront of me, and i mean big, bigger than the 24"er that i caught in oct, and that fish was pretty good size, so for the next few mins tryin to work this fish and not break off, wishing i had a 4wt instead of my 5wt to protect that 6x tippet, i tried playin this beast the best i can, next thing i knew it shot upstream stopped and slowly backpedaled down stream right infont of me with 6ft, it felt like i could actually touch it thats how close it was, i could literaly count the spots on its body if i wanted to, and i tell you what it gave me a sight for sore eyes, this thing was a monster, the biggest trout that i have ever layed my eyes on in person, this was a easy
27"er,  but not over 30, and i am saying easy because this fish towered over my 24"er with ease. oh ya not spawned out either, this fish was fat, huge, long and it was a male, with a salmon like hooked jaw, it was freakin awsome and it was all in slow motion. I FREAKIN LOVED IT, so as it slowly moved down stream infront of me while facing upstream. then all of a sudden it busted a bitch and took off, smoking my drag, next thing i saw was it doing a marlin or sail fish horizontal belly flopper on top of the water while shakin its head and he came undone, i literaly fell to my knees and just sat there to catch my breath for just a second, got back up checked my tippet and leader and went back at it again. for the next hour nothing from that hole and kickin my self in the ars wishing that i had put that 5x on instead so i would have felt more confident fighting the fish. oh well.

so after about an hour moved to a different spot and had not a single take, and it also started to rain, so went back to my fav spot again hopin i could get into another monster bow or atleast a decent sized one, well fished it for a good 2 hrs with no luck, and the rain started coming down harder so i decided to head on home.

checked some of the spawning fish, and i saw i big big fish, if i wasnt mistaken it looked like the same fish that i hooked early just above the redds in that pool that i was fish. and now it was near the redds. this fish was almost identical, same hooked jaw, same coloration, and from the looks of at the same size, but without being 6ft away from it i couldnt be 100% sure, but i am about 75% sure that it was. well on my way back up to the car, meet a guy and we started talking, i gave him a some advise for fishing putah, he was new so figured id help him out. good thing i did, he fishes the east walker alot, the hawk alot, a few other disclosed streams that at this time i will not mention, and he tied his own flies, so needless to say i didnt leave right way, i helped him fish this tail out, while i flied back up with my NEW GO TO SET UP. he fished it for about 30 minutes with nothin, so he moved down about 20 feet and i moved in, literaly my first cast fish on, nice 18" spawned out female with the bright orangey color to her, got here in and never took her out of the water, i would have loved to take a pic, but with her being spawned out i didnt want to chance it.

so that was my day, and couldnt have been happier, well actually landing that giant would have been nice, but i will get him next time.

oh ya i probably would have taken a pic of that female i landed, but thank god i didnt, there was a dead 18" female spawned out. dont know how it died, dont know if she got over played, was left out the water to long, not revived good enough, or just couldnt make it through the spawn. but i am happy that i saw the fish, and made me not take a pic of that female i landed, undid the hook in the water and before i could even grab her tail she was gone.

so what you sayin, you dont believe me about my epic day cuz i dont have pics. the conditions where perfect for big fish activity. but i see how it is, i guess i will just have to have pics the next time i want to post about my day on the creek. hahaha. i see how it is. no love no love.

anyways sorry about no pics, i wish i landed the big boy cuz i would have taken pics and posted them immediately. i didnt take pics of the one that i did land just do to the fact that she was spawned out and i didnt want to take her out of the water. so as soon as i could get the fly out i did and away she went. but when i do land the big pig i will take a pic and post it.

hey thanks memebop, you are more than welcome to join me anytime i am out there, for your info i will more than likely be back out on the creek next thursday, thats if the weather holds, and ill be using my new go to set up, and will not have a problem sharing it with you. hey and you never know i might be able to find time to SNAP A QUICK PIC this time around while i am fighting the fish so i can post about it the next day. hahaha.

anywho

hey i aint worried about it cappy, call me a liar, it doesnt bother me any. i look at it like this, you, eric, sk60, jt, and many others that i have fished with know that i can put the hammer down on putah and get into some fish on a consistant basis. so let him post, it aint gonna stop me from going to putah and catching fish.

so lets pray that the weather clears up by thursday, the water flows stay steady, cuz i know where i will be on thursday, in my favorite spot fishing my newly found go to flies, with either a fishing buddy from the past or a new one that i havent meet yet. either way you can look for me on the creek.

cappy, try to get off thursday we need to hit up putah together.

...Alright guys, with all the rain and wind we've recieved the past few days I think cabin fever is starting to set in amongst all of us. I hope I can help medicate the withdrawl symptoms a little with this pic I took last weekend at PC.

  Belated     HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

nice pic vix

i think the whole liar pic thing is just stating that he doesnt believe me without pics, and if you read my post 4 out of 5 fish came undone, so as far as gettin pics on those not gonna happen, and the one that i did land, i didnt want to take out of the water, just wanted to unhook her let her go.

so it is taken as if you dont have pics then it aint true. i know thats how it is taken.

Yes, Vix, that pic helped out on the cabin fever for a few moments...Now I really want to hit the water.

Brian, I get a joking response from my wife when a come back from many trips...no fish?! Any pictures?!

Pictures are great from time to time. We all like to see and relate experiences through words and photos. Truthfully, maybe not having any pictures is a positive -- recent thread discussions concerning glory pictures sacrificing prime locations on the creek and the amount of time a fish is out of the water, being by yourself. Keep fishing, keep reporting...

Either way, I believe and enjoyed reading about your day.

Brian,

Don't put up with it. I usually tend to drop the camera in the water while I'm trying to deal with
the fish, who is usually running line around my legs. Ol' Murphy was right.

Captain and Otter called it. Went to the creek today and it was like chocolate milk. Stay home and read about fishing or catch up on the flies you've been meaning to tie.
