A friend and I went to Lake Amador yesterday and found the fishing to be very good. For your purists, you might not like the fact that it is full of planted trout, but if you haven't caught that elusive "Putah Pig" yet, the fish in this lake are all huge. They only plant large fish and they are very healthy looking. The fishing is mainly stripping woolly buggers and you definitely know when you get a strike. One word of advice: Use a barbed hook. I kept losing fish while my buddy was landing them, and I finally figured out he was using a barbed hook. When I switched I never lost another one. The fly of the day was a size 8 black bugger. Float tube or pontoons work fine, but a boat with a trolling motor is very convenient.
man i really need to get up there after those cutt bows. nice report chemdoc i know a few of use was wondering how amador is fishing. what are the prices to fish there now.

so is that 8 per person and 9 dollars to park so a total of 25$ for one day between 2 people.

My friend and I had plans for Amador this Friday...unfortunately, so does the 30 plus mph wind!!! Then again, maybe I can pull out and try my LaFontaine Floss Blow Line spool...

I went to Amador last week and it's ugly up there right now....Water level is extremely low.....Lots of fish in a huge ball near the boat launch.....It was like shooting fish(haha) in a barrel....Float tubing is the way to go...........It was too bad I had my sons, we stick to dry ground now.....My point being, its a great time to wrestle a hog....but you could almost reach in with your hands and noodle for a monster cutbow too......have fun guys....JS
I recall a similar day like that last year between the marina and dam. Quite a few of the bait-chuckers turned to big treble hooks and began stripping/yanking line through the middle of the ball. Just about all of them went home with their limits--including Junior 1, 2, & 3. Never seen so many people from the perimeter of the dam run to claim a piece of real estate. Reminded me of Animal Planet--watching a pack of wolves...
I'm holding off this weekend from Amador!

Yeah, a lot of the people there have no courtesy at all. One I was fishing next to kept hooking fish in the tail with a kastmaster, and everytime he would say, " They hit it and spit it." I don't know if he was snagging on purpose or just plain stupid. I've seen a lot of arguments that almost turned into fights, but there a lot of fish. They plant an average of around 200,000 lbs of fish a year, since they have there own hatchery right below the lake. I do like it better when the lake is high though. Right now it's the lowest it's been since 1986.
Yes, don't forget the "ooooops, my cast went too far..." -- rather warning shot -- from some of the ill-mannered folk while tubing by the dam. They must not like all the FF releasing so many hogs!!!
But, I have come across some very courteous people--a group of guys not catching fish offered a delicious breakfast (pancake, eggs, bacon) in exchange for fish. I just hung around their "party boat" long enough to catch a few and earn a hot meal...
Yeah, keep throwing in 5,000 pounds at a time!

didnt know you can use float tubes in the basin. is it legal or illegal to use a float tube above havel bridge. i have seen one or 2 drift boats posted up under the bridge the last 3 yrs i have been fishing there, and one inflatable raft that my buddy casted out and hit with his weight, that was sooooo funny, first cast and it was money right on the bow of his boat. had to be there,
but again legal or not legal for a float tube.

If you can use a drift boat you can use a float tube, I wouldnt use one in there, Not safe ! As for Amador, I ain't paying or driving that far to ctach planted trout.
