Hey Whipper snapper were they both Steelhead? I live over in Hollister which is about 45 minutes from there, but I had heard and read the Steelhead runs there were not very good anymore due to more sediment in the river. Where the fish nice size. Where they wild steelhead or hatchery?
The one I caught was around 2 lbs. The one I lost was a dink, 10 inches or so. I know for sure the one I caught was a steelhead. I don't know about the other one though. I talked to a guy up there, and he showed me pictures of the fish he caught last january. They were some nice fish. Last year, we hardly got any rain, so it wasn't a very good run. This river can get muddy really easily, so you have to have perfect conditions for the steelhead to be in there. If you got to ernies.com, there are past fishing reports.
Just saw your posting, I was out there as well. Didn't get any hook ups but got a bump or two, probably just a small bow or holdover. The water was decent up above Rincon, but you're right, we need more rain. What were you using? I was using a muddler minnow and a r-bow imitation, on the sides or deep. Where were you (generally) at and what were you using?
Good to hear you caught something, congrats. I'm probably gonna hit it again on Wed's.
I was fishing at the gorge. Is that where you were? I was using a salmon colored glo bug. If you see a bunch of rocks stacked up, that's the hole I had both fish at. The water did look good, lots of holes, but did you look at the river when you cross over the bridge at highway 1. It looked so low, I don't see why fish would swim through that.
I was a bit below the gorge. As for the water at Hwy 1 bridge, YUCK! Infested with trash cuz of dope addicts and homeless. Its really flat anyway, all sediment and no holes to speak of. The next brige down (Soquel Ave.) has a decent hole. I only fish it right when I get off work as I can get in 1 hour before dark. It will hold a few on their way up between the rains. Not worth making a trip just to fish anything below Paradise Park. I did not hit the gorge last year, but will pretty soon after a rain (hopefully) and I have a full day. The river will hold a few fish as there are plenty of breeder streams well above that are not badly affected by sediment. But reports have not been very good the past few years and ain't gettin much better. Thanks for the info and pray for rain.
