"When I go fishing I want to be a part of the river and all my surroundings, not a stranger thrusting in upon them. I want to move quietly and at my own pace. I want to see and hear and understand. I want to feel that I know something of where the fish are and what they are doing and why. I want to be able to name the birds I see and take time out the watch them. I want to feel the river about me and fill my mind with the infinity along the banks, the rocks of the bottom and the creatures that shelter there and feed my fish. In such participation I cannot be a stranger. I belong there as a man should be able to belong in a setting he has chosen for himself. My claim is as good as that of the heron or the otter or the osprey, even though my efficiency may be less. As for the fishing, it need not be good. There need only be a chance that it may be good. I may find them or I may not. It matters very little. In searching I shall certainly find other things, expected or unexpected, and from somewhere among them I shall take home at least one bright picture of excitement or beauty to make the day. After forty years, rivers remain places of enhancement and the fish that swim in them creatures of wonder. Some small share in this is the fisherman's real reward.
Roderick Haig-Brown, "The Master and His Fish"
From an ad I saw. Woooow. pretty much nails it right there.
Thats great ! Thanx for sharing that. I thought at first i was reading John Gierach. Everyone should take a little time and really think about why you fly fish, Catching is great, But theres alot more to it i think.
Last month, I ran across another FF creeping into a hole with mp3/headphones--He was very startled to see, not hear, me walk by on the other side of the stream...I know each to their own...Makes me shake my head.
Thanks for the quote!

mp3 player, you got to be kinding me. wow, i would have shaken my head to. i want to hear the birds, i want to hear the water, i want to hear the grutt of a deer, or even a deer walking around behind me, i want to hear a fisherman coming up on me, or even a mt lion, ya that wouldnt be good, i want to hear the clickin of the drag as the fish takes it down stream, the way the fly line makes noise through the air, even the wooshing sound of the roll cast. all of it, i want to be able to hear it all.
MP3 Player, NEVER.
natures sounds will never get old.

Brian, my thought walking away from the mp3 FF was save the music for the drive home...Oh, yeah, don't forget the splash/rise of an out-of-view trout! You're right--I want to hear it ALL...

hey eric you know how i know you are gay, cuz you like to hear and feel the mosquitos buzzing around you ear. hahahaha
so when we gettin together and do somefishing. you wanna hit up the american, maybe the yuba, if we do the yuba ill drive, we will just split the gas, you can spend the night at my house and roll up there in the am for a full day.
i was chit chattin with sk60 yesterday after a day on putah, and there is a nice lil stream that he told me about, thats about an hour away from me, ave size fish is 8-10, can get up in the 18s if you are lucky. but you can catch them on dries, nymphs just about anything, and you dont have to go small, 12-16s work great up there.
pm me and let me know.

come on keith you know me better than that. i dont understand where he gets some of the sh-t he says sometimes, its off the wall.
and to clearify what i wrote.
if someone lives far away, and would like to crash at my house the night before i have no problem with that. an extra hour of sleep goes a long long way when you have a full 8-10 hours of fishing. i know it has come in handy for me a few times. and sometimes i have taken a nap mid day because i didnt have it. so instead of driving in the morning, just drive up the night before.
again just to clarify.

Flyfishing and brainsurgeon... You gotta know what you're doing in both fields. If you don't, then you're screwed. The only difference is in flyfishing, you just screw yourself. In brainsurgery, you screw yourself and the patient..lol.
