I did some shutting up and some fishing today. I met up with dtp916 early this morning. It was actually a pretty good day. We hooked into quite a few nice fish. The hot flies of the day for me were a #16 olive fox poopah and a #20 olive JT Special. It was nice meeting you Lahontan. It was good running into you, too, Captain.

Good to see you too, JT! Congrats again on the "midge" glad she's thriving.
My fortunes picked up after we spoke. I went down after that. Still trying to cover water that's new to me. Picking up new skills... and frustrations! Still definately a padewan ... hmmm ...maybe Jedi someday I will be.
5 solid hook ups, 1 to hand. For me #18 fox poopah (tan and olive got play), my "miracle" bug is slowing down... I liked JT's personal version, better than my store bought model (great work JT). The surprise a modest sized hold over...only fish to hand...that hit a #16 wet bwo dun.
~it beats diggin' ditches!
... Ed

That's right, dtp916. 3 wts are awesome. I was a little worried on one of those fish. I thought the 3 wt was through. I just kept on pulling, though, and it took it like a champ. Too bad my tippet didn't. The fish would have broken me off way earlier with my 5 wt.
Emerger, I'm trying out my new camera with this picture. This one is an unreal egg. It's sort of like a globug, but it has a bead in the middle. When it's wet, the bead shows through the yarn. It's pretty easy to tie once you figure out how much yarn to use.
of course now the question is why glass beads and not plastic?
easy way to put it
Glass sinks, Plastic floats

How do you get such a nice uniform shape on your Halo Egg? The eggs I tied for this year's steelhead season look mangled. I have tried to trim them into shape, but they still look terrible. I am using McFly Foam, which I have read is difficult to shape.
I'm not sure what kind of yarn I used. I got a bunch from a friend who was getting rid of some materials. I've since thrown away the packages and put everything in small baggies. I think the amount of yarn used makes a big difference. It takes a couple of flies before I figure out just how much yarn to use on each fly.
It's been a while since I've tied them, but there's one thing I can remember. When tying down the yarn at the end, you can make a loose thread wrap and play with the shape by pushing or pulling on the yarn. When the shape is right, make a few more thread wraps, progressively tightening the wraps.
