Fished hard today and in the afternoon I finally landed a putah creek hog over 20 inches, Brian and I estimated this guy at a good 22 inches, Hmmmm, maybe a little bigger . I've hooked fish at least as big but never landed em. This guy took a #22 olive midge with a green glass bead head. Other then that fishing was on the slow side. As soon as it started getting dark fish started goin crazy, Pretty sure they were after caddis emergers, Also did see quit a few small mayfly spinners. It was nice to meet some of you guys at the creek cleanup today, Really look forward to fishin with you guys again sometime. I must give Brian a big thanx for helpin me land that fish since we decided to not take a net, Thanx bro.
big big congrates buddy. glad i was there for ya. fish slow. man i didnt get a damn thing, jt missed a few takes, you was the only one that caught a fish out of the group. we did see that guy at that spot before we moved in at the end of the day. but that was it. we say some really impressive fish today. and would have to say that i can wait to see some of those bruisers that are still staging in lake solano. well cappy its time for me to crash my knees are so shot i cant walk, i have icey hot on them right now and a heating pad wrapped around them. i have to get them back in shape. especially if i wanna keep up fly fishing. well if you go tomorrow good luck, and its always a pleasure and a great experience fishing with ya.

Nice!!!
Word to the wise ... if you're over 40 and want to fish with Brian and "Capn" you'd better take your vitamins ... they go hard!
Good times guys ... thanks, Ed.

Congratulations. Very, very, nice fish..........not many folks(including myself) have been fortunate or skilled enough to hook into a fish of that class yet.
Nice fish, Cap! Congrats on landing a Putah Hog. Wish I could of been there for the clean-up, but had to work the weekend. Thanks to all that participated in keeping the creek the way it's supposed to be. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving week.
hey ed you crack me up. oh ya dont tell your wife about me and cappy you may not be able to come to putah anymore. you might actually go out and have fun, and we dont want her knowing about that.

Glad ya came along Ed. Oh and as far as going "hard" that was a pretty easy day. Its when your on your hands and knees crawling thourgh berry bushes it gets a little tough.
ya that was a pretty easy day, now later in the evening me tryin to get to the one spot near the campgrounds that was pushin it a lil bit. but other than that pretty easy day. hey ed what happened to ya, one minute we seen ya the next you was gone. where did you go and how did you do.
hey cappy again i was very happy to see you land that fish. you was due. even though i didnt catch any fish that day, just seeing a close friend land a fish like that, and me help out to land it is good enough for me. i got to hold it for a lil bit as well. so i am cool with that. well i guess until next time, huh. when that will be i dont know.

Right on, Captain. You definitely payed your dues. As for me, does anyone know how to get rid of skunk scent? I had a couple of hookups but nothing to net. I wish I could have stayed after the clean up to try to redeem myself. Oh well. I might get another chance sometime in the next year.

JT, That large pool were we started was just going off in the evening, I hooked a good one on the swing at dark, quickly lost it. Pretty sure it was caddis emergers. I'd like to know wich fly it took, i was using a 16 prince and a 18 green micro mayfly.
Stunned by the captains fish! It was a fun day with the clean up and all, but the fishing was fical!
I hit a couple stockers "downstream" before the clean up. Later met Chemdoc, who had been fishing the next whole over from me that am.
Did the the whole clean up thing, then the fun started. Captains fish was the highlight. Followed Captain, and tried that undercut, tailout. Nada!
Lost both of ya, about that time. Found a little whole at the end of an "Alice in Wondernland" path. About 50 yards from the site of captains winner.
Small, deep ... good size fish in the pool, color and thick. Very aggressive behavior, no takes. Hit a small native (not 10"s) right at dark, but it even came undone before getting a good look.
Was too deep to fish much later.
You guys rock! It was fun fishing with ya!
As far as the wife...well what happens on Putah stays on Putah... not really...that's my feable attempt at humor.
Cheers, Ed

it works though, what happens at putah stays at putah. i like it. if it was up to me id rather be at putah than vegas anyday. i may not win anymore, but will have an experience for a life time.

Way to go Captain nice fish!! That was me fishing in your spot at the end of the day yesterday. I was only able to get out to the creek after the cleanup and was surprised no one was fishing there. That spot has to be one of the best spots on the creek. I was climbing through bushes of poison oak and berries just to get to it a couple of months ago. The frog water below is also productive in the evening with size 22 BWO parachutes. I didn't figure out it was you guys until I moved downstream. The new volvo and bitchin Camaro gave it away.
OK so I think you guys left out the best part of the story. How did you guys land a Putah pig without a net?
Otter I didnt realize that was you up there, The tailoutt were we were fishing is loaded with fish, Definte pre spawn. I looked up a few times and saw you hooked up, What were they hitting. We moved up to that spot after you left and fish were just rising everywhere, Had one good grab on the swing. That is defenitly one of the best spots along the whole creek. How do you land a putah pig with no net, Very carefully ! I left the net becuase of the bushed we were going through, I think I'll be taking it along next time.
youll be takin it if i aint there. thats how you land a fish without a net, have brian with ya. eric does great without a net as well. man that was a great fish. and even better on a 4wt and 6x tippet. definitly cant beat that. its a good thing we was in the whole, cuz you know if we was in a rip or tailout that fish would have been gone.

I was expecting a better recap of landing the fish. I thought you guys were running up and down the creek yelling instructions and stuff like that. I have been using a lot of emerger patterns lately. Barr emerger tan and olive size 16. Black midge emergers, just thread and a CDC wing cut short size 20 and 22. And a hares ear emerger tan size 16 and 18. The hares ear emerger is actually a mix of flies. Pheasant tail for the tail, natural reddish brown possum dubbing, no ribbing and a CDC wing cut short, no bead. It is a part PT, part hares ear, and part RS-2.
sounds like that fly would will and have kicked some ARSS on putah.
hey there is a new thread in the other rivers streams section, about kings river captn paul started it, and i am gettin interested, if anyone has info on this river, post it on that thread. i might have to go give it a try.
hey shaun, how far are you from fresno. we might have to try it.

HaHa, Otter there was no runnin and yellin man, It's all about stayin cool and calm, I new he was hooked good, When we got it up I actually had him hooked good with both flies, He managed to hook himself with the top fly during the fight. Again I could not have did it without Brian, Way to stay cool in the heat of the moment Brian. I think I'll be taking my net from now on. We were gonna be going thourgh alot of bushes so thats why I left it behind.
you could always try to put it between the backpack and you back until you get to the spot just to keep it from snaggin on everything.
hey i know you arent to far from the kings river. what do you know about it. i have been reading about it today, seems like they are stocking the crap out if it, they have a designated trophy section, and have been doing a lot of creek rebuilding, throwing in big boulders, making some nice channels, some tailouts and spawning locations. really puting in some time and effort on this river. i gues in the 60s-70s and mid 80s it was a great blue ribbon stream then it just started going south due to warm water and very very low flows. in 98 or 99 the passed a law stating a 100 flow minimum, and have been planting trout from 1/2 lbers up to 10 lbers through out the yr, and every week in the winter they plant once or twice and in the summer once a week. they dont mention when the plant the big ones, but the put in about 3000 lbs in at a time 3-5 times a yr of 3-7 lb fish, half below the pine flat res damn and around the avocado lake area. seems like its gettin to be a great fishery again, would like to check it out. sucks its a lil over 3 hours a way. but its not to bad for you. just seeing if you would like to hit it up some time soon. flows are at 110, and will be that until the demand of water for irrigations then it goes up to 1000 sometimes higher. i am thinking thats its like a bigger putah. i have already talked to a few people and have said kings river caddis wooly buggers princes, and small flies like black gnats, sqitters, adams, bwos, royal coachmans that sorta stuff works great. so what you think.

22 looks to be a little big of an estimate, seems more like 19 or 20, either way nice fish. One tip though, try and keep the fingers out of the gills when holding it out of the water like that.
