I want to give Putah Creek a try this weekend (help) please

Hello everyone I just found this Putah Creek forum site and it looks awesome. I have wanted to fish Putah creek for a while now but I live in Lodi and have not had time to drive-fish-drive back.  This Saturday I think I'm going to give it a try but I have no idea where I should go and fish.  I am fairly new to fly fishing so if it's alright I will tell you what I have to fish with.  I have a bunch of fly's- streamers, buggers, nymphs, caddis....all the basic trout and steelhead stuff I guess.  I have a 5wt rod with 2 spools one with DT5WT floating line and one with WF5WT line. I also have an 8wt rod but I'm not sure if that would be to big or not. Would the 5wt setup be ok for fishing Putah?  I know the regs change in that area either today or tomorrow to only using barbless hooks and artificial lures.  Could any of you help me out as to where to go once I get there and what to use that would give me the best chance at some trout or steelhead?  I appreciate any help that you could give.

the 5 wt floating line is the way to go. if you are looking to go fishing on saturday get there bright and early. there will be a bunch of us there all day. there is a clean up that day as well. so fishing from sun up till about 830 then clean up from 8-11 lunch from 11-12 thena raffle, not sure about the exact times but that is close enough. then after all that fishing till dark. as far as flies. woolies are good, and flies from 16 and smaller, 18-22s work great.

again dont know what day you are looking to hit the creek but saturday would be your best bet, just due to a bunch of use fly fisherman and women will be there. you can pick their brains and possible hook up with one or 2 and fish with them.

but as far as rod and line the 5wt with floating line will work great.

i use a st croix 5 wt med fast action with 5 wt floatin line.

you can get away with 3wt right now, but i wouldnt suggest it yet. stick with that 5wt that will be a good all yr putah rod.

it will also work well for half pound steelies, steelies from 4-7 lbs, browns, and strippers under 12-15 lbs. i think you get the idea. a 5wt is a good rod to have. i have a 5wt med fast action and a 6wt fast action. looking to get a 4wt med or med fast action for christmas. we will see about that.

Digger0038,
Welcome aboard.  It sounds like your set for Putah as far as your equipment goes.  I hope you have fun up there Saturday.  Don't forget to disinfect your gear after fishing the creek.  It is full of New Zealand Mud Snails.  You don't want to aid their dispersal.  By the way, for the clean up, everyone is meeting at access #1 (the parking lots between Lake Solano and Lake Berryessa are numbered) at 9AM.

hey jt you me and shaun i guess are meeting up saturday morning for some early fishing before clean up. do you got the spot down where we are going to meet. if not pm me and ill let ya know.

hey digger0038, thats right 9 am at access 1 thats when everyone is going to meet up, and i highly suggest if you really want to get to know putah, catch some fish, make a difference to the natural beauty of this great fishery and meet up with some cool kick ass people, that you come out saturday. and again i dont think anyone would mind fi you tag along for a lil fishing with them.

all you have to do is ask. you could even ask on here to see if anyone minds if you tag along. thats what i would do, and have done in that past. thats how i met the captain (shaun) and lilwhippersnapper (eric). they are some great guys, good buds, and good fisherman, when we all go out, well put all of our heads together and catch a good amount of fish.

hey eric and shaun. you know thats why you guys didnt do so well up on the trinity right, its cuz i wasnt there puttin my knowledge in. oh well. soon enough we will all fish together again.

see everyone on saturday. you to digger

Hi Brian, I am new to the board as well and wish I could get to Putah on Saturday to fish and help clean up but I have to work. However, I did get out today and fished the long run about 100 yards upstream from the bridge. Tried a bunch of small stuff under an indicator and found what they were looking for about midway through the day. # 24 & 26 black midge pupa. Caught some on a zebra ( black body- silver wire) but did best on all black pattern. Used either a fox's caddis pupah or prince as delivery fly with 8-10" of 7x flourocarbon to midge off bend of larger fly. Lost more fish than I landed with about 6 to 7 fish in the net. Best was about 14" with the average around 12". Have fun Saturday, Viking.     smile

that sounds about right as far as presentation and flies, cant beat those midges what so ever, and right now the fox pupahs are work superbly. glad you had a great day. one thing to add, dont give your spots away. next thing you know everyone will be fishing that spot. i know exactly where you are talkin about, and would want to see you go there next time you go and see 5-8 people in your spot. just something to think about.

good job on your first day out on the creek. cant beat a 6-7 fish day first day out.
