Lower American NZMS

I saw a posting on the NCFFB forum stating New Zealand Mud Snails have been found in the Lower American.  I couldn't find any official information.  Nonetheless, I thought I would post this for those of you who fish the Lower American.

Wow.  Here's some sobering info on NZMS pulled from another link within the one you listed above:

http://flyline.com/environmental/nzms/

"Their sheer numbers dominate the base of the food web and they can consume over 80% of a rivers productivity."

"In a recent survey of 50 wading anglers at Putah creek, 100% of the fishermen had mudsnails on their waders and/or in their boots (an average of 33 snails per angler!). "

"Though inspection of wading gear has been suggested as a measure of control, the fact that snails may be a small as a fleck of pepper make this route highly unreliable. "

I probably had 100 the other day around my boots, watch out. I always rinse my waders and boots pretty good no matter where I fish.  Putah probably got it from some dude fishing the owens or somewhere else or Hot creek.  North fork Yuba has em too.  They go like wildfire so please be careful.

same with me, my shoes inside and out where covered with them, but that day i fished the bridge area where i havent seen any but accesses 1,2,3 thats where you can actually look in the water and see them everywhere, i couldnt believe it. i had never seen one until i fished those areas with the low flow.

They are here to stay guys. It will be interesting to see what effect they will have over the next several years. Maybe we should have a day of scooping up snails instead of picking up bait guys gargabe smile

I agree...here to stay, excluding some native parasite or disease destroying them. Any chance NZMS can't survive a Sierra winter? I am hopeful the harsh winter conditions in the Sierra will prevent their spread out of the valley fisheries.

I thought this was old news. While researching I read that the snails are found there already. Anyways, I'm not going to use the same waders and boots at uninfected waters. I hope they don't stick on fly lines and reels either.

They can get on anything that goes in the water, especially the smaller ones.  You can't see the younger ones.  They're like flecks of pepper.

JT what's the best way to get them off your line and reel? Spray it down with 409?

diluted solution of 409, and them make sure you clean and condition your line, and relube your reel. white lithium grease works great. i have it in a spray can, i use it on my cars suspention, it gets real bad some times and put it on it, but it works great for reels, fly reels, baitcasters spinners. you get the drift.

Spraying your gear with Formula 409 does not kill 100% of the snails.  You must immerse your gear to get rid of all of them.

Does anyone know if you could freeze your reel overnight to kill them? Or do you think that would cause more harm then good?

i second that. just put it in a bucket with diluted 409 and then make sure you do a good cleaning conditioning job on the line and a great lube job on the reel.

one question, why would you think that your reel and line might have snails on it. just wondering. did you keep in it the water for a while. from what i have read they dont swim, so your reel or line would have to touch the bottom of the creek or river.

Some people set their rod in the water after landing a fish (for example, to take a picture).  If there are mud snails in that area, they could possibly get in your reel.

oh ok, well they cant swim so it would have to touch a rock or weeds or something like that. not just dangle in the water

NZMS don't swim, but they do drift in the current, especially the young ones (think of all those tiny flecks of pepper that we don't see).
