Hit the creek at about 10am, weather was pretty nice, lots of bug activity in the air. I found some risers, but it took me about 6 or so patterns to match what they were taking. It's hard to tell sometimes when there are 3 or 4 different mayflys hatching along with caddis and midges. Once I started using a light tan midge dry (size 24) It worked perfectly. Lost 3 with a bunch of missed strikes and landed 3. I just figured out the patten and started to land fish when the hatch died down. It's cool, cuz I love when I get into some nice dry fly action. I moved down to the next spot and saw a few nice sized bows, and one of then was starting a nest. I was shocked because usially they down start till Dec-Mar on putah. I've allways seen the browns every year start their spawn about this time but not the rainbows. It was only one bow diggin a nest, so who knows, maybe they will start early this year due to the long low flows, or the weather, or for some other reason..

I also was checking for bug life under rocks and found a bunch of these stoneflies, looks to me like thier little yellow stones (correct me if i'm wrong) Anyone have a good pattern for these? They were pretty big too..(Pic posted below)

Anyways .. It was just another good day on the creek. I enjoy my time out alot more, since I had some time off when my daughter was born, but now i'm getting back into the swing of things on ol' putah ..

Cool pic man, those babies are rare.  That's probably a yellow sally nymph which once on awhile there are hatches of at Putah.  There's not a lot of those but what a cool looking bug.

Here is a picture of the adult stage of a yellow stone that I have seen on the creek. ( I'm pretty sure the yellow stone or "yellow sallys" are the only stonefly that inhabits the creek, or that I have found anyways. ) I've allways found these yellow sallys flying around, I just never found the nymph stage like I did the other day. I'm just gonna have to tie up some test patterns for the nymph stage and see what happens.

Looks like I'm gonna have to try this yellow stonefly pattern that I pulled off a tree tomorrow.

If I remember right, the fish were starting to show signs of spawning about this time last year.

I've never seen a stonefly nymph on Putah.  I've seen plenty of yellow stonefly adults, though.

For sure that pic is a Sally and I personally did not see these at Putah untill about 8 or 9 years ago.The two places that I see these the most is access#5 and above access#1.I do best in the spring and early summer fishing with yellow sally patterns they seem to be more prolific then. There is supposed to be a very rare species of stonefly in cold canyon which is a trib to Putah and there is also another small stonefly called a "Winter Stone" I really dont know the real name but it is very abundant in all the little tributaries to Putah. These bugs are about a #18-20,brownish-grey in color and are only in the tribs I've never seen them in Putah.

I fish putah a lot at night in the summer and that's when I've seen little yellow sallies.  Never got much action on them though.

I, like JT, have NEVER seen one of the nymphs though.  I've probably used my kick net 30 times on Putah and all I get are tiny mayflies, midges, and lots of caddis larvae.  Never any stones.
