Going barbless....suggestions?

Another blatant newbie question.... Got any tips for removing barbs?

I'm not tying my own yet!  Actually looking forward to it, just no time yet.

Trying to get ready for the 17th.  I've been told you don't even want to have a single barded hook in your vest if a warden stops you in the "off season".

I've been able to put together a pretty fair selection of bugs from a variety of sources, but haven't noticed any barbless for sale.

Right now I'm useing a needle nose pliers to crush or break the barb, and using a file in some cases to get rid of the remains. VERY teadious.  Any tips to speed it up?  I'd appreciate ANY ideas!

Cheers,
Ed

I use needle nose pliers as well.  I have a pair without grooves which makes it alot easier on smaller flies.

There's no way a warden can cite you for carrying barbed flies.  AFAIK, this country hasn't turned into a police-state quite yet.  ct.

Do you think they'd say anything about the 5/0 treble hooks and 3 oz. weights that I keep in my chest pack?  They're okay as long as they're barbless, right?

JT, You got it all wrong man, If ya wanna snag a big trout you gotta use a 6 or 8 oz. lingcod bar, blankstare, I am joking of course. Thats what the idiots up in washington state do. I just crimp the barbs down with my foreceps. I remeber reading a post here awhile back that said if you were to run a cotton ball over the barb and if any cotton is stuck on the barb you are illegal.  Mx19, I have been checked for a license about 4 times in the last year, Once the warden even searched my backpack, my cooler, and the trunk of my car, I didn't mind, It always ends up being a freindly conversation. Maybe we should enforce the regs. our self. I can almost garuntee there will be bait dunkers up there next weekend.

I too use needle nose pliers to crush barbs, but don't go so far as filing any remaining nub. I just make sure the barb is crushed flat with no gap.

By the way, a barbless 5/0 treble with 3-ounces is only okay only when you have baited up with half a jar of Powerbait and launched it from a 12-foot surf pole with 30lb test.biggrin

I saw a warden drive by in his truck a few years ago.  That's it for me in the 15 years that I've been fishing the creek.
